  1. TMPGEnc confuses me. I'm using TMPGENc Plus v2.521 and TMPGEnc v3.0.4.24 XPress to encode several .AVIs to DVD though the encoding speeds are a bit curious...

An .AVI file (two 700MB files totalling 1.4GB) with the following stats:

    [File Name]: MyLargeMovie.AVI

    (Video Stream)
    608x256 @ 24FPS
    73432 frames * 2 .AVIs = 146864 frames
    XviD MPEG4 codec
    1456kbps Video Data Rate
Using: VFAPI Reader: Directshow Multimedia File Reader

    (Audio Stream)
    48000HZ Sampling Rate
    6 (Stereo) Channels
    AC-3 ACM audio
    171512846 Samples Length
    448kbps Data Rate

TMPGEnc v2.521 is set for CBR MPEG1 Layer 2, 352x480, 3168kbps Video Bitrate, 384kbps audio. The entire encoding process (1.4GB total) takes 1.5hrs. With TMPGEnc Xpress the same thing takes about 2.25hrs.

Now when i try to encode the following .AVI file (file length: 350MB) the process takes longer than i expected:

    [File Name]: MySmallMovie.AVI

    (Video Stream)
    576x432 @ 25FPS
    63858 frames
    DivX Pro 5.1.1 Codec
    Data Rate: 900kbps
    Using: AVI File Reader

    (Audio Stream)
    48000HZ Sampling Rate
    AC-3 ACM Decompressor
    63847 chunks
    71520960 Samples
    Data Rate: 224kbps

Using the exact same settings as the previous .AVI file, TMPGEnc takes approx. 2hrs to encode the entire .AVI file.

I'm confused. Why does a the complete 1.4GB .AVI take 1.5hrs to complete whereas this other 350MB file takes 2hrs? The FPS, # of frames, even file size is smaller for the 2nd .AVI file. To me the 2nd .AVI should be encoded in about 20mins.

    Thanks

  4. Ok I understand. But why does MyLargeMovie.AVI have triple the running time (120 minutes vs 40 minutes) and at least double the frame count over MySmallMovie.AVI, yet can still be encoded in less time (1.5hrs vs 2.25hrs)?

Perhaps the decoding of a DivX video (MySmallMovie.avi) takes longer than an XviD (MyLargeMovie.avi)?

    Thanks for clearing things up.

  5. Ok i think i solved my own problem. The encoding is taking longer possibly because the actual video resolution totals more pixels per frame and so more encoding needs to be done...
