  1. Hi All,

I've recently been told that my motherboard will handle upto a 2.4 Athlon (present 1.3 Duron). Obviously this will help with video editing, but will I experience any problems with Windows XP? I have read that some upgrade, such as the MB itself, means having to call Microsoft to get the OS re-activated.

Does anyone know if the same holds true for CPU upgrades?

xp is gonna give you the least amount of probs as far as upgrading. and you could pick up a 2400+ for dirt cheap these days(gotta love amd).

you might have to reactivate but its really no big deal.

As long as you don't have OEM. The MB cannot be changed but you can probably upgrade the CPU.
Still a few bugs in the system...

well thats true, is it a "recovery disk" or did you buy the actual OS from the store? but you should still be able to upgrade the cpu

  5. Hi,

Shop bought OS, so hopefully limited problems. I'm not intending to upgrade the MB, just the CPU.

If your K7 Triton is a Gigabyte board, it can take up to a XP3400+ processor. I would go for a XP2600, but the XP2400 would work fine also.

I would also recommend upping your memory to 512MB to take advantage of your MB and processor. Memory is cheap now days.

You shouldn't have any major problems with the OS. Reactivation would be the most to have to deal with. Also, it never hurts to do a clean install and a reformat your HD and reinstall your OS and programs. Gets rid of a lot of crud accumulated over time.

You will see a large increase in performance going from a Duron to a XP CPU.

I think AMD gave up with the XP series with the XP3200, unless you are into OCing. That's the MB rating that I related. I would assume the MB was rated before the XP reached the end of it's lifespan. The Athlon 64 (Different MB) makes it up there, though.

  10. Hi Redwudz,

Yes, its a Gigabyte. I was thinking XP2000, not sure about the leap in extras, i.e. cooling fan. Would I be best buying a new cooling fan too?

    >I would also recommend upping your memory to 512MB to take advantage of your MB and processor. Memory is cheap now days. <

Yep, I was looking at the increase in memory, prices for most of the stuff I want to buy is really cheap at the moment

    Cheers
