"Now the machine only knows one word....Loading. "
Send the unit in for repair. I had the same problem. Sent it in, they changed out 2 carbon resistors, and it has been running 24/7 since I got it back.
No problems so far.

I was browsing through the manual for JVC DR-M10S and on the page on compatible discs, it is noted ( under the section on DVD-R/RW,) that discs labelled 1x should be used. Does this mean that only discs with such read or write speeds should be used? I am thinking of getting this unit so I would be appeciative if some one can enlighten me on this point.
Thanks for any responsesIf you do not learn from someone's knowledge and experience, then you are doing it the hard way -
I just got a JVC DR-M10S. I love the machine, particularly the PQ and great quality from old VHS tapes that I have converted. I have previously burned DVD's on my PC with a Pioneer AO7 burner and have never had a compatibility problem. I copied a VHS tape to a neighbors GoVideo DVD recorder and my JVC on the same type media. The one copied on my JVC does not play on my old Philips DVD player, which has always played my previously burned -R discs. The one burned on the GoVideo DVD recorder plays on the old Phillips. I am stumped. I have finalized every disk that I have burned. In looking at the files on the disks, they are the same on the JVC and GoVideo disks, although different size files. I have tried burning it on TDK media, which has had the same results. I took the disk created on the M10S and uploaded it to my PC with DVD Decrypter and then burned a new disk on the Pioneer burner. Still not compatible with the Phillips DVD player that has always played -R disks. I am posting this message on this thread since it appears to be a problem caused by the M10S rather than the media. Does anyone else experienced this or have any recommendations?

Philips is a DVD+VR recorder.
JVC is a DVD-VR recorder... in a "DVD-Video" mode (but not the same as "true" DVD-Video.
DVDs bought in stores and authored on the computer are in DVD-Video format.
Not all players accept all formats.
This is not a +/- issue, merely the structure of data on the discs.
The DVD-VR uses a VIDEO_RM folder with a VIDEO_TS folder.
The DVD+VR ... I forget off top of my head.
The DVD-Video is VIDEO_TS
Most people use DVD recorders as capture devices only, or playback on the recorder too. So these "problems" are not commonly experienced.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Thank you for the reply lordsmurf. The Phillips DVD player is only a player, not a recorder, and has been playing the -R DVDs that I have been burning on my Pioneer AO7 for a long time. Since I reburned the DVD on the Pioneer and it still doesn't work, I have eliminated the burner as the problem. The GoVideo DVD recorder that I used at a friend's house created the same exact file types in the VIDEO_TS folder as the JVC. But the disk created on the GoVideo machine was recognized and playable on the old Phillips DVD player. There must be something in the files that is causing the problem rather than the file types.
I agree with using the M10S for capture especially since the quality is outstanding; but if I do and I transfer it to the PC and copy them, they will have the same compatibility problem. I would rather not convert them to another format and then reconvert back to burn another DVD -
GoVideo is also a DVD+VR that I have seen.
Simply, you can do what you want, but you seemingly made user mistakes on the computer (or bad software choice). I would look into that a bit more.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

When I previously used Shrink to make another disk, I hadn't re-authored it. I tried it with re-authoring and the disk is now read by the older Phillips DVD player. The problem now is that it plays video but no audio. The only change the reauthoring does is to get rid of the menus, which must have been the culprit. A strange thing I did notice, which didn't make sense to me also was that when looking at the menus before re-authoring, it showed them in a Japanese folder. Since everything is set to English, that makes no sense to me. I have ordered some new software that will allow me to convert to mpg and then re-author, since none of my current ones do.
I would really prefer not to have to re-author all of the tapes I need to archive. Is there a way to verify or change the JVC DR-M10S region code? Perhaps there is a problem with it that is causing my problem. Since it was manufactured in Japan and the menu showed Japan, I am wondering if that could be part of the problem. -
Much of DVD+VR and DVD-VR *is* the authoring style. That's what I'm saying.

I record (capture) everything with my JVC DR-M10 in DVD-Video format to DVD-RW, then rip and save the resulting VOB's as a single MPEG2 file (.MPG) to my computer. This can easily be done with something like Simple File Joiner (freeware at http://www.peretek.com/sfj.php) for DVD recorder VOB's since they contain basic single video/single audio MPEG2 files.
I trim (frame accurately edit) the saved MPG with Womble MPEG Video Wizard (you can also use MPEG-VCR) then author the finished DVD from the edited file. If you don't need frame accurate editing, MPEG2Schnitt and Cuttermaran are freeware programs that can perform simple I frame edits and allow you to pick chapter points. All four of these programs are great in that they do not re-encode your original file and 100% of the video and audio quality is retained. Plus, AC3 audio is no problem for them, either.
TMPGEnc DVD Author is a simple and easy to use program for authoring; but I like basic no-menu DVD's so I use IFOEdit to author my DVD's. I haven't run into any playback problems with DVD-R's created this way. -

Yep... that way works just as well. Saving the entire MPEG2 file to the hard drive of your computer first is the key, I think. This seems to make things work better and with less of a chance of audio/video sync problems, stuttering, edit point glitches, etc.

Being ignorant really sucks! I have been using DVDD, but I haven't found a way within this wonderful tool to be able to convert the DVD to MPEG or get a single VOB file. I always get several VOB's. I would sure like to know how. I will download some of the recommended programs and see how they work. Thanks for all the tips.

In DVD Decrypter: If using Mode - File, in Tools - Settings - File Mode: set File Splitting to None.
If you only want one of the titles, use Mode IFO. As above, set File Splitting to None for Mode IFO in Settings. -

I rip to multiple VOBs with DVD Decrypter and then trim with TMPGEnc DVD Author. Then either burn using ImgTool/DVD Decrypter combination or Cyberlink Power Producer (if I don't want to keep the ISO file as archive).
Have not encountered audio sync problems. {knock wood} -
Thanks for the good info. I was able to do some new things with Decrypter, but am still having the same problem where it won't read the burned DVD unless I get rid of the menus when I reauthor with Shrink. But this way there is no sound. It is an AC3 sound file which has always worked in the past. I have seen some other posts where folks have also had this problem; but they haven't been able to fix it either. I will keep playing around and studying the available knowledge base.

I downloaded the Womble trial version. I think I am going to like it. It is nice to find an editor that will open a VOB file. I will play with it tonight to see if its output will work on my old player. Can't imagine why it won't. Having used it for about ten minutes this morning after I got my 30 day trial code, I unerstand why I want a single VOB file and what a sweet editior this is. Thanks guys so much for pointing me in the right direction.
