Hello,
Maybe these might help:
https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?tools=&madeby=&formatconversionselect=WMV+to+DVD&h...or+List+Guides
They're under wmv to dvd. I'm sure there must be a relevant conversion step in one of them. Good luck

thanks il look into that now, but i dont need wmv to dvd i only need to avi cause my dvd player plays avi
im quite new to the whole converting and buring thing so i wonder if you could tell me if converting to svcd or vcd (dvd format) would get me longer? -
i just tryed Stoik Video Converter and had no joy is there anything basic i can use even though that seems pretty basic
-
it seems to only work the wrong way around, i tryed input file C:\~filename.wmv and output i put a none existing a file *.avi and i get the message cannot open input file
i tryed it the other way around and it worked EEK
help! -
In this case I would recommend TMPGEnc XPress. If you choose AVI Output you can select your DivX/XviD/MP3 codecs and XPress automatically uses the same resolution and framerate as your WMV file.
I know it's also possible to output to AVI with TMPGEnc Plus but if I remember correctly it didn't automatically keep the resolution/framerate of the source, so with Plus there's more configuring involved. With XPress it's easier. -
just tryed that now and it says cannot open or the file is unsupportedOriginally Posted by glockjs

TMPGEnc XPress natively supports source files in MPEG-1/2 format, unprotected DVD-Video VOB, Windows Media Video®, uncompressed AVI and QuickTime® files so I have no idea why it doesn't accept your wmv file. It certainly opened and converted the wmv file I tried. Is the Windows Media file reader checked in Option -> Preferences -> Input plug-in setting?

If you want AVI I would try the last version of virtualdub to support ASF: http://files.digital-digest.com/downloads/files/virtualdub/VirtualDub14c-asf.zip - If it won't open the file, you might try changing your file extension to ASF.
For MPEG-1/2 I would use TMPGEnc. Make sure you read https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgenc.htm#problems as the file unsupported error is pretty common and easily fixed. If in doubt, Google it. -
that link dident work, but i looked around and finally found only to get the error "ASF file support has been removed at the request of microsoft"Originally Posted by jimmalenko

Try VirtualDub 1.3c -> http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/asf2avi.html
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/virtualdub_1_3c.cfm
But VDub 1.3c can't open my wmv file, TMPGEnc XPress can. -
this just gets worse and worse, i installed the MS MPEG-4 VKI Codec and virtual dub 1.3c when trying to open my *.ASF i get "ASF: illegal object flags 0a in packet at ad0 packet size = 16a8, pp = 12, send time: 0:00"Originally Posted by erratic

OK, let's go back to the MPEG route, shall we ?
Try the tips listed at https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgenc.htm#problems.
PS sorry about the bad link - it is the link from this page.If in doubt, Google it. -
