  1. Hello,

I have a couple .MOV and .AVI clips off a digital camera that I wish to extract the audio from.

I've made attempts at Mov->Wav using TMPGEnc w/ the QT plugin, but ended up with soundless wav files. GSpot reported the .mov files to be "Non-AVI File - Type Unknown" and is unable to render them.

With Avi->Wav in TMPGEnc, I got wavs that were either distorted? or lost audio quality.

Forgetting my earlier attempts, given the files off the camera are already of low quality, my main concern is to successfully extract the audio without furthur degeneration - and perhaps improve the sound quality?. How can I accomplish this? Are wav files the way to go, and are there any ways to enhance the quality?

The .Mov file audio specs are as follows:

    Sample Rate: 7867 Hz
    Channels: Mono
    Sample Size: 8 bits
    Compression: None

    Avi:

    11024 Hz
    Bit Rate: 88kbps, Mono
    Sample Size: 8bit
    Format: PCM

    Use Quicktime Pro.
Open your .MOV file (you could also open your avi files here, if they are MPEG-4 format).

    -> EDIT -> EXTRACT TRACKS ->

choose Sound Track (a new window will open that contains just the audio) -> (in the new window) FILE -> EXPORT

    Et viola.

AVI audio is most easily extracted using Goldwave. Just load the AVI, Save wav. Or use VirtualDub

  4. Thanks, I'll try using Goldwave for the AVI.

Is there another way of converting the .MOV without Quicktime Pro?

Also, is .WAV the format I should use to prevent quality loss?

Seems like they both contain pcm/uncompressed audio files (both mov and AVI), which is wav, so no loss here... But they are low spec wavs, so you shouldn't expect miracles regarding the quality. Maybe some filter might encahce things a little, but 7867/11024 Hz 8 bit samples aint much to work with...

  6. Xilisoft Video Converter, a new product, is easy to realize the function. You can rip .mov and .avi files to wav, mp3, aac, wma, etc.

Rad Video Tools will also let you extract audio from .Mov files, as well as convert to AVI. EO video also works.
