    MACCA350,

Have you looked for software updates?

Vendors are coming out with new versions.

I am not the only person that stated they run sp2 with no problems.

So sp2 is not the issue, there are other factors.

You may need to run a spyware check, it may be you need updated software.

You may need to flash your motherboard bios.

  2. Just because you use it without problems doesn't mean that it's us or our equipment. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another.

That is why you look for updated software.

If you do not keep your computer updated, that IS your fault.

A little off the topic bazooka, but your sig suggests you're not entirely a M$ fan. With that in mind, why defend SP2 so much? Why should people who write decent software (or marginal software for that matter) have to update their product everytime M$ fixes one of their many flaws? Look at the list of applications that worked well under XP SP1 that M$ knows breaks with their fixes!

Sp2 was written with security in mind.

The programs that clash are not secure and create problems.

A program update fixes this dilemma.

So for people do blame SP2, is not only erroneous but admitting you do not take very good care of your computer from a security standpoint.

I am into computer and network security. That is my trade as a network engineer. I am not against microsoft in any way. I recommend Firefox because it is more secure.

Microsoft has for years ignored security in the mindset of offering more features. Now that they are focused on security, then why not update your programs that are not only a security risk but also do not run like they should with the new service pack.

You are more secure with SP2 than with SP1.

Vendors are releasing updates for the programs to run like they should.

I hate to say this, as I really don't want you to think that I totally disagree with you or am saying your wrong, but consider this for just a second...

SP2 was written as a patch to try and stop the flood coming from the security gaps in XP. Programs like Nero rely heavily on bus architecture. There is no real security risk in the Nero application! M$ has seen fit to heavily control many aspects of harware operational needs in the name of security. It IS SP2's fault! It has gone from being a security nightmare to being a hardware nazi at the cost of programs that pose no security risk.

Where are you Tron?!?!? Master Controller has taken over!

This is where I disagree with you.

Any time you use outdated software, that is a security risk.

Men are not perfect and there are bugs and exploits in every piece of software.

By keeping current, you minimize the chance of your computer being taken over by hackers.

  9. I have never had a hacker problem, but I did have SP2 problems. Do the math and I will stick with SP1 which hasn't given me any problems.

Apps like Nero and Sonic were never security risks! And, they functioned reasonably well before SP2 was developed to close their own security holes. Neither of the two apps I mentioned were or are security risks, but neither now function properly due to SP2. There would not have needed to be an update to either app if not for that, so in fact they were not outdated software until M$ outdated them for us!

True, men are not perfect (especially if you ask women), and there will be bugs in every piece of software (except the pieces I write), but I do not believe there are exploits in every piece of software. You are correct that keeping current is in fact, the best way to protect yourself. My only argument is that software which is not a security threat should not have to update to fix bugs in the OS created when they tried to plug their own holes.

I agree with you tekkie, but SP2 is really almost a new OS, so you have to make sure it will run with the new OS.

This is no different than programs that would run on 98 that will not run on XP, so what is the deal with blaming the Service Pack?

Anyway, I slowly walk away from thread.

I am going through a depression stage right now and am thinking about just getting my degree and then giving up on the IT way of life.

SP2 has been fine for me and my 100 or so workstations.
    If in doubt, Google it.
