Missing audio

This site over the past couple years really got me into converting and burning VCDs. Now I have a sudden problem after everything has gone so well. I use TMPGEnc and TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress to convert avi to mpg. Now the audio is missing from the resulting mpg files. I even tried extracting the audio to a wav file and creating the mpg file.
Things that have changed since the audio was working:
Installed an Adaptec Serial ATA Host Controller 1205SA and a Maxtor SATA drive. Some Windows XP critical updates, except no SP2.
PC is an 440BX board with a Powerleap 1.4 GHz processor. Audigy sound card, onboard IDE plus a Maxtor ATA card.
I've backed out the Windows updates to no avail. Next is to take out the SATA card and driver.

I'm an experienced tech, but this one is new to me. Anyone have some ideas?

Probably Isn't the answer to your problem, but the other day I couldn't hear any audio on my encoded mpeg file, I was just about to re-encode again, when I realised that my wave-output for the soundcard was on 0%, so no sound was coming through at all and the MPG file was in fact fine...

I finally found the problem. FFDShow 20041012 (generic) . I uninstalled it, deleted the C:\Program Files\ffdshow, and cleaned the registry of all references to ffdshow and rebooted. Then I installed FFDShow 20040828, all is well.
FFDShow 20041003 is probably ok too, I just jumped back two versions to make sure. I may try ffdsho2004101012sse at some time to see if it makes a difference. Hopefully this info will get to the sourceforge developers. I don't see anyway to do so on their site.
