  1. I am a newbie, I have tried the reading and search but I might be searching for the wrong stuff. I have a mpg file that is about 790 mb. I want to fit it on a cd that is 700mb. I figure I have to compress it. So I have been searching for stuff to do that. The first time I tried to convert it ( or compress it) I ended up making the resulting file bigger. It was about 6 gigs, then I tried TMPG. the wizard would start up and everytime I tried to load the target file, it would shut down. So could anyone please help me or point me in the right direction. Thank you for any help.

  3. I'm going to guess your MPG file is VCD ready. Try burning it to a CD in VCD format. You can fit over 800 MB in VCD format because it uses fewer error correction bits than data CDs.

  4. The file is a mpeg1 file. It was a SVCD file but I used isobuster to extract the video and audio from it becuase I burned it to cd but it would not play on any of my players so I just wanted to watch it on my computer. I can watch it now, but I wanted to burn it to a cd to take with me, it's just a lil too big. Thanks again

    SVCD's MPEG-2, isn't it ?

Your computer will play SVCDs so long as you have a MPEG-2 decoder - There's a free one here.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. Yeah my computer does play it, the problem is I am trying to fit it on to a CD and it is 790 mb, the cd is 700 mb. I am trying to figure out how to make it smaller. When I burned it as the svcd file it wouldn't play. Thaks again.

SVCDs use MPEG2 and VCDs use MPEG1.

If you have the MPG file, you can use Nero to burn a VCD. Select File, New, VCD and drop the MPG file into the MPEGAV folder.
If you don't have Nero, then use the NTSC VCD template in TMPGEnc.

Video disks use less data protection than data disks. an 80min 700Mb disk will hold 800Mb of video. Also you can overburn a little.

Get the free version of VCDEasy 1.5.2 and either create an image there or burn directly. If your file is mpeg1 then create a VCD, if it is SVCD (ie mpeg2) then create an SVCD. VCDEasy has the settings to permit overburn.

Make sure you have the right codec installed.
