Can't capture from VCR but can capture from DVD player

Hi there, as suggested by the topic i seem to be able to capture video from the dvd player, but not the VCR... (it's a 2 in 1 machine). I am really new to capturing, and don't really understand the technicals, so if anyone has got some ideas that I can try to fix this problem i would really appreciate your help! thanks in advance.

I would think that has something to do with the DVD/VCR combo. There's probably a way to select the output or maybe seperate jacks in the back for output.

Best way to test it is hook it up to a TV and see if your getting any picture when you play a VHS tape.

I have a Sony DVD/VCR combo and the s video output will ONLY give me the image from the DVD player.

The composite (RCA plug) output will give me images from the DVD or the VHS player.

Maybe yours is the same?

Same with my Zenith DVD/VCR combo. Worth checking.

Rosy, Do you mean output jacks from this machine to another VHS and or computer.

OR are your talking about the machine itself. You can copy from DVD to VHS in the machine but not VHS to DVD? Am I correct here.

Hi everyone..

dr dos, i was referring to dvd/vcr combo machine to the computer (i've never tried copying dvd to vcr or vice versa, but sounds fun!)

I am using the s video cable so maybe that is the problem as you have both suggested brainstorm and westcott i'll have a go at using the other cables- they're the ones with the colour on the jacks? i just figured the cable that came with the card would do the job!

Yes, there would be no reason to have it on there if it didn't output video. FYI if your not aware s-video is for video only, it doesn't contain any audio. You need to hook up the red and white RCA jacks for audio regardless of how you capture from a vcr/dvd player. The yellow RCA jack is your video if your not using or can't use s-video.

The reason for the S-video is that the output quality is slightly better, most consumer VCR's don't have it.
