  1. This may be a no-brainer, but should I put outputting my home videos to progressive MPEG-2?

Currently, I output my home videos (from a MiniDV cam) to interlaced. Is this dumb? Am I right to assume that every DVD player is going to be progressive eventually?

Finally, how big a difference is there in picture quality between progressive DVDs and interlaced DVDs?

You also need a progressive capable TV and component or DVI connections in most cases to be able to view progressive footage. Everything will be this way eventually (or something newer and better will come along).

If your source is interlaced then there is little to be gained, and possibly lots to loose going to progressive. You would have to deinterlace your footage, and depending on the method, could well reduce the quality of the output.

Progressive is great for film sourced footage, as you can keep the original framerate and all data intact.

I would stick with what you are doing unless you have all the right equipment. If you do have everything you need, then the best thing to do is make your own comparisons.

You should only ouput your videos in Progressive format, if they were shot in Progressive format. That means your video camera hs to be able to shoot progressive video. Not many do. If your camera only shoots Interlaced (very likely), then you should only encode in Interlaced (bottom field first) format.

Mine will do either Progressive or Interlaced. For low action footage like indoor, I shoot in Progressive Format. For High action footage like sports, I shoot in Interlaced format (it looks better when you slow it down for instant replays).
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

  4. Thanks for the info. I will leave it as is. This will save me the hassle of re-encoding it all! Woo-hoo!
