  1. Taping off the TV there is no law against it either VHS or DVD ...however you suppost to erase it after a week by rights heres what I want to say tho.

If you are a fan of a show. You see the DVD of it for sale you buy it and thats great..BUT WHAT IF the shows/stuff you really want is simply not alaivable on dvd??? Someone makes there own tapes/dvds of it and sells them via the web its regarded as ilgeal.. and you can be sent down for it.. thats mad How can you be 'priarting' when the discs you are selling don't exist??? You are providing a service to fans of the show... If the show then does get released different story the bootlegs (if you like) must stop

Eg, I'm a huge bewitched fan (the show not the forthcoming film which I lothe) YOU CAN'T GET IT ON DVD (or VHS commerically).. apart from Seasons 1,2&3 which are out in japan, becuase of that I would'nt trade/sell dvdr's/tapes of thoses seasons to people (but alot still will) But what about season 4 onwards .. They NEVER show them on TV here now... so how the bloody hell you you suppost to get them.. IDOJ has NO DVD release AT ALL. and never has any plans either so if I were to sell DVDr's of it to someone that would be wrong too.... Same goes for simspons seasons 6 onwards. Red Dwarf series 6,7,8 and... 2 fools & Horses episodes 'Rondey Comes Home' and 'A Royal Flush'... they don't exist 'yet' why is it wrong???

Discuss this and tell me what you think but how can you 'bootleg' what doesn't exist?????
DVD region settings are a joke, I can't believe how stupid people are falling for it

Unless you own the rights to it, that is simply not your decision to make. It's really not that hard of a concept to grasp. Just because you believe a title should be available to be bought and sold, doesn't make it so.

See: George Lucas/Star Wars DVD, etc.

Yeah, but I don't like Friends I like Bewitched.... Its just not fair we have to wait & wait & wait.... even when they finally do it will never come out where I am (Region 2) and i'll be 'crossing the line' when I buy thr region 1 discs on import

The stuff that goes to DVD right away is stuff that the companies producing it know there's a demand for that stuff...and marketable.

Bewitched will eventually make it to DVD, but it probably wouldn't sell as well as Friends...so Friends gets more priority.

If you're that desperate to have the episodes...there are plenty of ways to get 'em.

I seriously doubt any law enforcment is gonna knock your door down and demand you hand over your copies

The whole thing about copyrights is taken a little too seriously around this site - those who own the rights only take action against other companies or whatever they consider a big threat.
A fan of a 4 decade old TV show is hardly a concern.

Just do a search for some Bewitched Fan sites, and you'll find everything you're seeking.

You can also try to get people to sign an online petition to get the whole series released on DVD - that might help speed things up, but I wouln't hold my breath.
They would start out with one season at a time...and if sales are decent, will continue to release each season.

Friends is out because the rights-holders feel there is a market for it.

if you're so hot to get Bewitched, get an internet petition together and get people to sign it. make the rights holder aware that there is a market for it.

You could buy the region 1 discs and then copy and convert to region free so you could watch them.

Then sell the original region 1 discs to get your money back.

I’ve heard all about it and they edit them to death, I’m a 'Witchie' Id just bore everyone when I was pointing out the scenes they cutting as I watched. (In the way a trekie would with Star Trek)

I have got them all the (un-cut) episodes here on VHS which I’ve made into my own DVD-R's but they say ''that’s Illegal ... oh but we won't release it officially" its just the principal of that. That really bugs me

Ps, there is a campaign to get it released on DVD of which Im about 1 of only 3 people in the UK to be a part of.... But there are a few britcoms you'd of never heard of Im e-mailing and bugging the BBC to release aswell

Email the company about your elaborate plan to release their material on DVD (uncut) and how you have quite a few buyers lined up. As long as you don't give them any concrete evidence, there's nothing they can do to you. Meanwhile, the greedy bastards may push to get an Official version out there before you can make it available to the world and cheat them out of millions of dollars in revenue.

(I doubt this will work but it's worth a shot.) :P

How can you blame the copyright holder for not releasing something on DVD? Maybe they think it wouldn't be profitable or maybe they just have other works that they are busy trying to get out first.

Part of a "copy right" is having the ability to choose if and WHEN the public ever gets your material. Think about it. What if they do a Bewitched movie? What if they do a new series? Wouldn't it make more sense to coincide the DVD release with that release? This happens all the time and having bootleg versions out there can in fact interfere with the copyright holder's interests and cause real harm.

Copyrights were originally intended for the creator to get a decent repayment for his art. Nothing more.

The system is flawed. This is one of many issues with it. If somebody has something, and does not act on it within a reasonable time limit (say 20 years?), it ought to be seen as abandonment.

No that would be patents. Copyrights are intended to promote creation through the protection of the artist's rights to those creations. The allowing of the individual to recoup their investments is considered a monopoly right and has been expressly denied application to copyright law. Most copyrights are still held in things which are no longer marketable, or never were. These copyrights are not about money, they are about control.

Well this is of course a matter of opinion, but if the system is flawed because of this then so is about 75% of the rest of the world since the international standard (as set in Berne and TRIPS treaties) is life plus 50 years minimum.

  16. There are many reasons why certain things aren't reissued or released - it isn't always the decision of one person or copyright owner.

    Just some examples:

The movie, Slap Shot, was caught up in some legal issues surrounding the music used on the original soundtrack.

A lot of popular music playing thru-out the movie, in which the rights expired, had the film in limbo for a while, that it was illegal for the copyright owners to release it in it's original form.

What they did was re-released the movie with an all new soundtrack (that sounded cheesy) and used that version for video releases (even though earlier editions had the full original soundtrack), Pay/cable and all network TV versions.
Somehow they managed to iron out the legal matters and finally were able to restore the original soundtrack for the Anniversary DVD edition.

The movie Five Easy Pieces also had gone several years without any distribution to work out legal rights surrounding music on it's soundtrack.

Then there are situations like Jim Morrison (of The Doors) leaving everything in his will to his wife, Pam...only she passed away shortly after he did, and all of her stuff went to her dad.
Her dad got stuck with a bunch of Jim's stuff and became the legal owner of all of it - only he had no interest in any of it and wanted no profit from it.
So...it all got locked up someplace out of reach from the public.
Among the stuff is an experimental art film Jim had been working on that never completed.
Several years past, and the film was somehow leaked into the underground market - and copies turned up in various places on the 'net, including Ebay.
There IS a market for it, however, it is a bootleg...and the owner doesn't want it distributed no matter what.

SomethingWeird Video got into some legal trouble for releasing the K. Gordon Murray kiddie matinee films he produced/distributed in the '60s.
Even though they were able to obtain the rights to K. Gordon Murray's films, they did not have legal rights to the films due to the fact most were produced outside of the U.S. and are co-owned.

When more than one person owns the copyrights, you need permission from all parties involved - not just one owner.
So that can lead to trouble as well.

Some films are on hold due to restoration...and some films are simply LOST.

Not all copyright owners/holders believe they're sitting on a goldmine waiting to happen - some trash their own films because they think they aren't worth anything...and some just lock theirs up in a vault someplace and just forget about 'em (until someone comes around inquiring about one or more).

Many copyright owners pass away...and whoever they leave the rights to don't really know what to do with those rights.

Some rights continue to bounce around while others get misplaced or lost.

There are some advantages to bootlegs - and even the artists of the work or sometimes legal owners rely on bootlegers if they are their only resorce for obtaining their lost works.

Bootlegs don't always cause harm - in many cases, they can help...especially for free publicity.

It all depends on the situation and individual case.

No, each episode has 25 mintues and about 15/20 seconds If totally uncut network ALWAYS trim bits... people won't notice in general but if sat there watching it with some of you I could tell what and when they cut.. I think you've been too engrained by "the man" on this one. No way. That doesn't even make sense. How many copyright disputes have you heard of that were about control, and not the financial losses? (Often backed up by bogus numbers, like that of MPAA and RIAA.)

Large percentages don't impress me. A mistake is a mistake, no matter how large, nor how much support it had among the narrow-minded diplomats that did it. Don't pretend "the world" had anything to do with laws enacted by a few diplomates/congressmen, from pressure by PACs.

    Hello,

Jumbo_Holden - Don't worry your time will come. I had the same wait with a spirited comedy called SLEDGE HAMMER

It was a brilliant cop comedy starring David Rasche fromt the 80's that aired 2 seasons on ABC. It maid a few tapes (a few "greatest hits"). I had one of them and about 12 shows on tape. That was it.

FORTUNATELY I found the official website managed by the series creator. He setup a petition to get the show on dvd. He also was able to remove a laugh track the network forced on him.

My prayers were answered! This year season 1 was released on dvd!!!! And there are plans to release season 2!!!

It was mentioned before, as soon as a market is seen they will release it. Look, shows like the A-team and 227, The Jeffersons, and even ALF are being released on dvd. I'm sure Bewitched is in the pipeline somewhere!

lordsmurf, all laws that are passed have included the notes from the hearing. On large scale sections of law like title 17, the Lantham act, etc... they always state the legislative intent behind the bills.
you can check and see for yourself.

Patents are by definitiion a creation of a monopoly. The idea is that nobody is going to bother spending millions of dollars to find a better way to do something, if after making that finding, everyone in the industry gets to exploit it. They would never recoup their investment, so the government allows them to have a monopoly on the invention for 20 years to make a reasonable return. Patents are by definition all about money, and the legislative notes affirm this and caselaw has repeatedly done so as well.

The vast majority of copyrights, however, cost only about 20 dollars to register. You may invest your time and your dedication into it, but short of the filing fee there is no money to recoup. The spirit and intent of copyrights has never been about making a profit on your creation, though obviously it allows you to do that. Copyrights are about control. It is what allows you to create something and prevent someone else from exploiting it without your permission. Since it is art which you have created, you have the right to decide how it is used, whether that art is marketable ($$$) or not. Copyright law expressly provides for protection even when it is proven as a matter of law that you have not been damaged monitarily.

Maybe it is just words on paper, but nevertheless this is what the courts and the legislature have stated time and time again in describing copyright law versus other forms of intellectual property protection.

    Patents=recouping investment

Trademarks=preventing confusion in marketplace, pawning off, and deception (regardless of whether trademark holder is harmed or not)

Copyrights=providing creator control over how work of art is used, including the right to exploit it for profit, but not depending on it.

Large percentages don't impress me. A mistake is a mistake, no matter how large, nor how much support it had among the narrow-minded diplomats that did it. Don't pretend "the world" had anything to do with laws enacted by a few diplomates/congressmen, from pressure by PACs.
Are you suggesting that 56 countries are under the control of a "few" diplomats/congressmen? I find this hard to believe. Also, you can't possibly be talking about representatives from America since we were one of the last countries to sign the Berne Treaty. American had nothing to do with the designation of life plus 50 years as the international standard. That was determined way back when the US was still pouting about having to grant moral rights to the author.

    Yes.

When millions and millions of people participate in file sharing, that kind of puts the few dozen companies lobbying a couple hundred representatives (that give approval to a few diplomats that sign the treaty) into perspective.

People want a fairness and balance currently not afforded to them by law.

The USA has backed out of so many treaties in the past couple years, we may as well back out of one more, and fix our own laws while we're at it.
