I noticed these on pro level TBC's. What are they and is there any way to make them work with S Video or composite ins/outs?
Thanks

a BNC connector is just a better connector than a rca style connector .. if they are for s-video , you have two of them, you see them mostly on rgb and rgbhv and component and sync connections , as well as composite.. all pro equipment uses bnc (except s-video is often still the din connector as svideo is not really high end pro).

you should avoid convertor connectors at all costs if you can , use the right cables is a far better thing

use a rca cable to bnc for mixed .
keep in mind that every connector adds reflections to the signal path - specially cheap rca connectors or cheap turnarounds (like radio shack) . many are not even 75ohms ..
I prefer BNC connectors as they are physically a better connection and since i use canare connectors - a lot better quality -- where i do have to use rca (at home) , i still almost always make my own cable cables using belden 8281 flex or canare equal , with canare connectors.
for svideo i use dual cables --
cables really do a make a difference - but there are stupid cables out there in the 1000's of $$ that really for all purposes are scam (in fact recently one of the top high end cable companies was raided and busted for selling cables at 1000 and up and they turned out to be made in china for a few bucks - the funny thing about it is that those cables got very high reviews in high end stereo mags , which goes to show a sucker is born every minute .. )
i like those 4000$ power cables that several companies are selling right now ... give me a break ... 4000$ for a AC cable !!!! i really went into the wrong business .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
i am not saying to add or change or try to use BNC at home -- justif you do have some equipment that has them - use the right cable ..
many plasmas, and hdtv and video projectors come with BNC
better yet -use the digital connections if possable"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
The only reason I was interested was the pro units on Ebay with BNC's seem to be a VERY cheap alternative to the new "consumer" grade TBC and processing amps. These things can be had for about $100 with shipping!

there may be a reason for that - and not a good one ..
then again i dont know which ebay ad you are looking at .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
BNC's are no big deal. A more heavy duty connector than RCA type jacks. Male BNC to Female RCA adapters work just fine, as do cables made with a male BNC on one end and a RCA at the other. Composite 75 ohm video signals are exactly the same whether they are coming out of pro or consumer gear. Note that pro video gear may have lots of other BNC connectors for component RGB, Genlock, REF in and out, etc. When shopping for a used pro TBC or other video processor, you have to know what it is you are looking at. Bargains can be had on used pro TBC's, hardware processors and analog VCR's because there is very little demand for them in the broadcast and editing world anymore due to everything having gone digital. But, any used gear (pro or consumer) that one acquires is by definition a risk, since it is not new or under warranty.
As a side note, there is a pro type 7-pin s-video connector, too. These appear on some broadcast S-VHS VCR's and duplicators, instead of the 4-pin mini DIN seen on consumer gear.
