I have been unable to capture more than 20 seconds of video from Canon GL2 to my comp using any AP lately. I'm thinking that maybe it could be the Panasonic DV codec. I need some advice on how to uninstall it.
Also I was wondering are there an specific drivers on a comp that hadle digital video cameras interface to the computer and if so how can I uninstall them.

    Thanks in advance,

  2. Not sure how you'd go about uninstalling it, but I doubt its the problem. When capturing, you wont be using the codec as it is used for rendering to a final .avi after the initial DV capture/editing process. At least, that's what I use it for anyway....and it is wonderful quality-wise - completely blows the other .avi codecs out of the water.

If you find the install .inf file for the codec, open it in Notepad and it shows all the registry keys written during the install, perhaps you could just delete those if you want to uninstall it? Tread carefully though!

Thanks for the info. I will not pursue this uninstallation since you said that this is most likely not the problem.

  4. Go to My Computer, into Device Manager and go down to Video Codecs and right click Into Properties and you will see a list of the currently installed codecs on your machine, there you can remove the Panasonic DV Codec if you desire to.

    Hi videocheez,

Check out Codec Sniper - it's recently been added to the tools list and claims to do exactly what you want.

In the comments, some people have had troubles and recommended other tools (like GSpot), but I'm not sure if they allow you to delete codecs, just view them.

I ain't no expert, but I think that you might want to look at other areas for the problem. Check your capture card or soft ware, Maybe do a reinstall of anything shakey. If you got a hunch that you have codec problems, try a differnt one, cinpack or what ever is on your system, check in device mgr to see what you have. I go thru this sometimes and it is almost always a setting that got changed while I was playing with another program or something. If you don't like puzzles then computers ain't for you. Maybe give a step by step of what used to work and a step by step of what you are doing now. Good luck anyhow
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

Thanks for the advice, I will give it a try even though the following comment makes me think that removing the codec may be useless

It could be a defective firewire cable and / or port (either cam or PC).

If you've more than one firewire port, try a different one (or try on a friends PC with firewire).

Try a different cable - sometimes one (or more) of the pins can be defective.

Try a different DV cam with the current cable / port connections, then try the second DV cam with different port / cable.

At some stage (hopefully) that'll identify or eliminate any hardware problems...

    Good luck.

I was able to capture to my laptop but that was to a different comp and with a different cable. My laptop and camera both have the mini firewire connnector so unfoutnanetly i can't use the mini cable on my desk top which has the big fire wire connector.
I hate to spend the $35 bucks for an experimental cable. Oh well maybe i can sell it on ebay if thats not the problem or be real careful with the packaging and return it.

Explain your problem and, if they're a good store (i.e. more likely to be so if they're not a chain...) they they may well let you take it (paid for) and try it out and return for a refund or credit note if need be.

    It's worth asking...
