  1. I am lucky - I can smoke as much as I please then stop with no cravings whatsoever. Days, weeks or months later I can have another carton and enjoy it, then stop again. I seemingly cannot become addicted to nicotine, no matter how much I am exposed to it.

This is how I was told about this genetic basis for addiction - I asked a lecturer about it in a lab session and he told me the current theory. It sounds a bit weird, but still...

I believe I am one of those people without any of those genes. I may smoke a pack one day, and then not smoke for two days and I do not get any "cravings". I may feel like smoking a cigarette but definitely not something I would call a "craving" and really not even as strong of an urge as when I want to eat, or drink water say.

I guess I am pretty lucky in a way, since it is impossible for me to get addicted to nicotine. In a smaller way, I am unlucky since I will never feel the pleasure that hardcore smokers like Cap get after not smoking the whole day and lighting up.

Kind of ironic how a big smoker's rights promoter such as myself is actually not even that big of smoker.

In fact, if I try to chain smoke, or say smoke three cigarettes in a row, I will get soooo sick. It is really unique to me since most anyone else I know does not get so ill from nicotine overdose. For me, cigarette overconumption sickness is worse than anything, worse than the most awful alcohol intoxication sickness or hangover, worse even then most any drug I have tried (legal disclaimer here if necessary). It is as if you have been poisoned by the most vile toxin and the nausea, dizziness, intense sweating etc doesn't let up for a half an hour.

So only in moderation for me, but oh, then it is really quite good.

Ene to this day if I suck one back too fast I can get mild nicotine poisoning. I get horrible cold sweats, feel like I'm on the verge of passing out, and see spots before my eyes. All I can do is lay flat on my back and breathe evenly for a few minutes. It's a very unpleasant experience, so I'm very careful now. Not fun.

This happenes only rarely and hasn't happened in a couple of years.

But you're right 888888, say for example I have to make a trip to the Kansas City plant, I get to do without a cigarette for 9 hours because the plant is smoke free and all under one roof. It used to be the Pratt & Whitney airplane engine factory during WW2 and was at one time the largest building in the world under a single roof. It's quite a hike to go outside and grab a smoke, so I just do without. Much easier.

By the time I get back to my rental car, I'm ready. I have to watch it because I get dizzy with that first one after 9 hours, but it's almost orgasmic in the pleasure ...getting my fix. My brain says "Oh thank you ...thank you" with the pleasure. It's niiiiice

Well, I must have all 20 of those damn genes. I used to dip in high school and that started me on my nicotine addiction. I quit during my second year of college, but it took me about a year of quitting and starting and quitting and starting, before I finally put out the habit. Then, I started hanging around my friends who smoke and started to smoke. I tried quitting, but would end up buying a can of copenhagen and dip, instead. I successfully quit again for a few years, but I recently started smoking again. I could probably quit if I had a REALLY good reason, other than my health.
