Now im sure this is a real newb question and i probably know what the answer is going to be.
I know that when you convert a dvd to SVCD a lot of quality is lost as a result because even 2 cd's cant hold nearly as much as a DVD.
On the other hand a DVD ripped to XViD looks great and at only around 700MB, its half the size of two video CD's.
So my question is, once you have already ripped a DVD to XVid, since its already so small, would there be any loss ripping it to SVCD?
Probably a dumb question i know.
Thanks for any help![]()

Hello,
You mean xvid to svcd???? There would be some loss anytime you convert something.
Since you have the originals anyway
just rerip to the format you desire the first time. Clean and simple.
KevinDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I have ripeed one to both formats as a test and like i said the xvid one looks much better than the 2 svcd version.
so if i convert the xvid one to svcd, would it look as bad as if id just ripped straight from dvd to one svcd?
Cuz im thinking that would look pretty bad -

Create SVCDs directly from the DVD not the xvid file. You'll be encoding only once instead of twice. Creating SVCDs from the xvid is like making a VHS tape copy from a copy. There would be some loss anytime you convert something -
It'd look worse, as the original DVD is a better source than the XviD.Originally Posted by Xander2061

Your one CD Xvid looks better than your 2 disk SVCD, is that right? So you want to know if you convert your one CD xvid to a one CD SVCD, will it look better than the 2 disk SVCD made directly from the DVD source, have I got that right?Originally Posted by Xander2061
NO, it will look much worse. The two compression methods (Mpeg-2 and Mpeg-4) are quite different. Xvid requires much less bitrate (data) for a given picture quality than SVCD. Try using the DVD source to create a 3 disk SVCD and see if you like that any better, or stick with Xvid. -
ok bugster, you got it right.
I think ill stick to 2 svcds cuz i think its getting kinda silly with 3 cd's.
I mainly wanted to know cuz i want to make a multi film dvd that has several svcds on it if you know what i mean.
ANyway thanks for your help -

Why didn't you say so in the first place???
Here are some guides for svcd to dvd found on the left of the screen:

because i know how to do that already, i was asking about xvid to svcd.Originally Posted by yoda313

If that is the case, and your source material is coming from DVD, you should encode to 1/2 D1 res (352*480/576) rather than SVCD res as this is DVD compliant and SVCD res is not. It will give you greater compatibility now and in the future. You could still use SVCD type bitrates, or even a bit higher if you have the space. Quality wise you almost certainly won't notice the slightly lower res.Originally Posted by Xander2061
