  1. Hi could someone pls tell me what bitrate should I keep while converting from VCD to Xvid such that there is no quality loss and yet there is sufficient compression.I've tried as low as 350kbps (XviD Video). However I feel that it could go even lower without loss. Pls suggest me the best bitrate for conversion. The VCD quality is Reatil or sometimes Cam. The resolution is mostly 352*152 and very rarely 352*192

  2. You will need to identify this for yourself - a complex video (such as one with lots of movement) will require more bitrate than one with very little complexity. It is simply a case of trial and error, and your own personal standards.

With respect to losing no quality, I'm afraid this will not happen. These codecs work in a "lossy" way - they get rid of data to compress the video. You will always lose some quality when you re-encode video.

  3. Cobra is right, the lowest bitrate you can use depends on the source and how picky you are about video quality.

If you don't need files of a specific size consider using Constant Quality mode in Xvid. Select the Single Pass option, and press the Target Bitrate / Target Quantizer button to make it say Target Quantizer. Then set the Target Quantizer value to somewhere between 3 and 5, or thereabouts. The lower the setting, the higher the quality and the larger the file. At 3 a DVD quality MPEG will reduce to 1/2 to 1/4 of the original size with little loss of visual quality.

If you use Quantization mode you don't have to worry about bitrate, just pick the quality you want (run a few test clips to see what you find acceptable). If you insist on using bitrates, anywhere from 200 kbps to 1000 kpbs for a VCD MPEG file. It will also depend on whether you use a variable bitrate or a constant bitrate.

  6. maniktushar - I told you that we cannot specify your bitrate for you, only you can decide what you will settle for.

What film (or films) are we dealing with here? That should at least help us know what range you should be in.
