I am not at all surprised the combo unit has broken down on you. I played with two of them when they first came out, and was disgusted by dodgy operations. The DVD recorder portion of that unit reacts a bit differently than the standalone unit.

LOL!
Markatisu, I'm laughing with you, not at you. When I started getting my 'loading' errors, I did the same justification you did in your note.
I 'narrowed' my problem down to about 5 untraceable, unreproducible problems (none of which was the units fault----media, power, overheating, dust, etc...). Because of my lack of experience and the overwhelming positive experiences shared on the forum, I was very reluctant to blame the unit. In mapping up my 'root causes' for the errors with everyone elses 'root causes' for errors, there was no consistency and no common thread other than one thing: JVC-M10S.
I hate to say it, but Markatisu, I think you just crystalized it for me and I'm going to investigate the Pioneers. I may have gotten a bum machine but if I'm going to roll the dice again, I'm going to roll them in a different direction.
If anyone ever gets to the root of the elusive JVC 'loading' error, post it or email me. I'm dying to know!!!!!!!
j---Right now I'm having amnesia and deja-vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before. -
If seeking replacement: the only other suggestion would be to research the newer LiteOn units (or clone) with fans, using LSI chips, and that natively have a 3-hour mode.
Pioneer may be a "safe" unit, but it's just CBR recording. Not bad, but not as good as JVC. Same for LiteOn, constrained by CVBR on LSI, but still excellent up to about 3 hours, and not too shabby for 4 hours (still better than Panasonic and others).
For a simple "extra" unit, take a peek at the SANYO being offered at Walmart.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

I just never had this problem till recently so thats annoying me more than anything else, , I will deal with the problems and muddle through because it gets the job done better than anything I have ever used, but as with all hardware I will upgrade next year, especially with the advancements that seem to come every 6 months
Glad at least I am not the only one, i love the unit though despite what some think of the combo, its worked fine for months with no complaint from others who have received the end product, just something I have to deal with
I wonder what they will cost next year, the Pioneer is already at like $200, i wonder if we will get to the $99 DVD Recorder next year -
It seems to me one of the biggest advantages of these DVD recorders over computer card capturing is the image accuracy and quality is generally so much better. The video pre-amp sections and the digital sampling in the name brand DVD recorders is apparently superior to most capture cards. Plus, the enhancement and noise reduction circuits in some of them really work very well. The engineers at JVC, Pioneer, Panasonic, Sony, etc. have such a wealth of knowledge and extensive backgrounds in consumer and professional video that this is not all that surprising. The DVD recorder is a relatively new device, so there are certainly improvements that still need to be made in them.

Anyone tried the Toshiba? That's the only other choice for me since I have to have RAM and don't like the new Panasonics. I read some good things about it awhile back, but haven't seen anything recently.

However when reading all this I wonder whether the "loading" error might be related to errors in the source -
captures cards - exterior or internal - often show the problems of lost frames when capturing from poor or weak sources - using a full frame tbc usually solves that problem
so, in case someone meets the "loading" error during recording with the jvc, it might be worth doing the recording again using a full frame tbc (like the datavideo dac 1000) a watch the difference - I know the jvc has an internal tbc, but that is not full frame
I could make the test but.... my jvc has not yet shown the problem ! -

Nearly all my captures have been from laserdisc, or from the SR-W5U VCR (which has a built-in full frame TBC) - both usually very good to excellent sources. So maybe glitches in the source is one of the causes of the sudden "loading" message?
-
I seriously think its power related, I unplugged the machine for 5 hours as well as everything else on the same wall/area
Plugged it back in and the time was gone but all the discs I had problems with before now work and even the tape that made it crap out worked fine
I dont doubt it will happen again but its interesting, its almost like it was crying for some rest even though I turn it off every night and keep it off most days until I am doing projects
I just wish JVC would let us know what it up, there is some quirk somewhere and from a tech aspect I just want to know what it is lol -
markatisu, is it really off when turned off?
Personally I doubt it. If you can use the remote to turn on and off, then it is really on and standby. Same thing with Most home consumer products, some of the electronics must be powered up to respond to the remote.
Put your hand on it, I'll bet it is warm.
I use a Cyberhome where the first one died early, the replacment (free) I now run with the cover off and I turn it off on the back (AC switch). The first one used to be warm even when turned off, the disks came out hot, the 2nd one with no cover and ac only when in use the disks come slightly warm.
My take is it could be a heat issue and that is why unplugging it for a while helps. Try removing the cover, if it is in a kid free area. Try unplugging it when not in use if no AC switch on the back.
Good Luck -
Anyone tried the Toshiba? That's the only other choice for me since I have to have RAM and don't like the new Panasonics. I read some good things about it awhile back, but
There are several pre-set One-Touch recording speeds and it also offers Variable Bit Rate settings that allows you to manually adjust the bit rate. The manual bit rate settings are variable anywhere from 9.2MB/s(1 Hour) to 1.4MB/s(6.5 Hrs).
There is an Auto Fit function. This automatically matches the recording length to the best record speed and bit rate, similar to the Panasonics FR recording.
This TOSHIBA DVD recorder has a total of six different settings for the Digital Video Noise Reduction. Three of them may be used for DVD playback, tuner or line input viewing and three Digital Video Noise Reduction settings are design to be used for DVD Recording! Great for tweaking poor incoming video signals from VCR’s. The incoming signal can also be adjusted for brightness (four levels), contrast and volume.
I would not be surprised if the recording quality and reliability of this model is superior to the JVC DRM10. If I didn't have my Panasonic E-60 I would seriously consider this Toshiba. -
How about the Toshiba RD-XS32 with the 80GB hard drive? You get all the pre-encoding processing adjustments of the D-R2, plus a sort of 2-pass encoding (record at max bit rate to the HDD, transfer and compress to exactly fit a -RW or -R).
$379 at eCost
oops, I forgot... black level bug!!

Anyone know for sure if the black level bug was fixed for the Toshiba D-R2 standalone? Is it CBR or VBR?
-
I didn’t have chance to test drive this DVD recorder (it wasn’t available), but as far as I know it has VBR recording, Time Base Correction, Black Level Expansion, Digital Video Noise Reduction Recording 3D-DNR, Digital Video Noise Reduction Playback 3D-DNR, 3-D Y/C Comb Filter, Block and Mosquito DNR. So far, nobody reported any black level bug.
This DVD recorder is probably the best design machine on the market today for archiving VHS videotapes!

Add me to the list of victims.
I got my unit in mid July, and never had a "LOADING" problem until a month ago.
At first, I just unplugged it, let it boot up again, and kept going.
2 weeks ago, it started happening way more often, and in different situations.
Once in the middle of recording a DVD, once when I was titling a DVD prior to finalizing, and once with the unit empty and idle.
This morning, I plugged it in, it booted up, but when I hit the power button, the HELLO message would not go away. Totally frozen. Multiple unplugs and reboots later, still stuck at the HELLO message.
Of course this all happens 2 weeks after my 90 day labor warranty expires
I call JVCs local service center, asking for a price to repair the unit. I figured they would know what it costs to repair units that have the LOADING message problem, since I have heard so much about it. He said his service center hasn't gotten one yet, but he knew about the problem.
To my surprise, he said that he would honor the 90 day warranty. His exact quote to me when I thanked him about helping me out was, "Who do you think we are? Sony?" I haven't dealt with Sony Customer Service, but perhaps they aren't so lenient with the 90 day warranty.
The service center will have it Saturday, and I will post again when I get it back from the shop.
Other than this issue, I have been nothing short of impressed with the quality of video capture with the JVC. Really nice.

I still think it's 99% related to the POWER SAVE mode. Turn that "feature" off, and the unit seems to work much better.
Also:
Feed it clean source (a requirement of any DVD recorder), and then clean power (surge strip), and finally use good discs (not dirty ones or cheap ones).
These 4 common-sense things will apparently fend off the evil "loading" monster.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

today, I stumbled by hazard over a dutch video forum, and the same subject on the problem of the JVC DR-M10
most of the time, the loading problems starts after weeks/months of use and I wonder whether there is an accelerated aging process going on - the strange thing is: when "on", even not used, the unit does noet heat anywhere but in standby (off) position it gets hot, mainly on the left side
I can imagine that this does not do any good to the electronics
my Panasonic DMR E50 and my good old DMR E20 never get warm of hot in standby -

Regarding blanks, I have only used Verbatim datalifes (made by MCC).
Certainly not a cheap disc, and not dirty either.
I doubt the discs are the issue in my case, as it has shut down on me when it was empty and not being used at all.
Also the way the frequency of the errors ramped up over a short time span tells me it is most likely computer related. The processor in the machine seems to get confused and eventually "locks up". As someone who has repaired computers and instrumentation controlled by computer processors for over 20 years, it sure looks like a processor problem to me.
With any luck, JVC will reveal the "fix" for this issue so we can all learn something.

who is going out to buy a new power strip right now, just in case -
I've never used power save, but mine is starting to act funny lately. I haven't seen loading yet, but twice in the last 2 days it's locked up on me, the first time I had to unplug it to get it to do anything, the second time I pushed the power button for 10 seconds or so and it finally shut down. This thing was bought in August, the last one had problems in the first week. These are very poorly made machines.

Today my JVC was setup to record a program, 15 minutes after the recording should have started I noticed the display on it said "LOADING"
Pushing the power button did nothing.
Pulling the power cord for 10 seconds cleared the problem, it started up normally with "LOADING" on the display for a short time then was ready to go. I guess this could be a media problem but I was then able to do a format on the -RW that was loaded without any problems.
I normally always leave the unit in "Power Save" since it runs cooler that way but of course with a program ready to be recorded it was not powered completely off this time. I have another program set to be recorded on the same disc in about 36hrs.
Has anyone contacted JVC and got an answer as to why this is happening to so many people?
Thanks.
