1:1 on ALL DVD9 using DL DVD's

Hi all i remember reading a post on this forum about doing perfect 1:1 backups of of dvds that were on dvd9 dvds so people could make backups of all their dvds without having to lose quality and extras and downsample audio etc

that all seemed fine but someone said that hollywood dvds are infact 9.4 gig (i think) and DL dvds that we would buy to burn to are only 8.4 (i think)

So basically can one backup every retail DVD 1:1 if you have a DL dvd burner.

Obviously u can backup lots of movies some u can even do 1:1 on a 4 gig DVDr but i was wondering if all hollywood DVDs that i own can be backed up and does anyone know of a DVD that cant be backed up 1:1 and has to lose some extras etc.

All of the following apply to 12cm discs, total capacity as computed in computer GB (2^30):

DVD-5 (Single Layer single sided) = 4.37 Gb

DVD-9 (Dual Layer, Single Sided) = 7.95 Gb

DVD-10 (Single Layer on each side, a Flip Disc) = 8.75 Gb

DVD-14 (Single Layer on one side, Dual Layer on the other, a Flip disc) = 12.3 Gb

DVD-18 (Dual layers on both sides, a Flip disc)= 15.9 Gb

Hi -

Thats what i thought and had read before, so in theory i can buy any dvd and back it up as i own a DVD DL burner as i havnt noticed any 14/18 DVDs

unless anyone has found a dvd that they couldnt do 1:1

You wont get an exact 1:1 replica, but you wont have to recompress. You may find the layer break has change positions, depending on the software you use to burn it.
