What software would you recommend? How does re-encoding affect the video file itself?
    Thanks

  4. The quality drops as the bit rate drops.

Question: Why do you need to reduce a file from 5MB to 4.7MB? Or did you actually mean GB?

    Try VirtualDUb to re-encode.

Sorry I meant GB. The think is I am trying to fit it in one disk.

I don't know what you mean by "what codec?". I know the file has an AVI extension.

OK, it has an AVI extension and is 5 GB. Codec is how the AVI is encoded. Use GSpot to find out. How long (in time) is the AVI?

Then it ought to be very easy to compress - DivX or XviD at 1 GB/hour is very good, if the resolution isn't extremely high.
OK quality DVD rips usually weighs in at 700 MB for a full move, 1.5 hrs.
VirtualDub is the tool to use.

I installed VirtualDUb but how do I tell it to compress the file? Snooping in there I saw "Restrict AVI to 1G" is that what I should check?
    Thanks

No, you should change the video bitrate under video->compression and choose divx or xvid.

    read a guide like
    http://www.divx.com/support/guides/guide.php?gid=8
