Shift Change: A Short Story -- Part II

"Yeah. looks like it is you that needs the growing up!" Aero spat out, then them quickly looked sideways to see if a moderator caught his misbehavior. Confident no one had, he giggled to himself. "What dorks there must be on this site to let me get with this crap." he giggled again.
Capmaster did his one-handed shuffle of his red cards again. The wind chimes hanging from the ceiling had blocked Aero's view of him, but also blocked the first kill shot of his career. It was no longer a question of if, but now a matter of when. He glanced at his watch. Almost shift change again. The chimes tinkled in the wind as if mocking him.

"Never shoot in anger," his Sensei always told him. "your heart needs to beat, your lungs need to breathe. These already cause your aim to be unsteady at any given time, why add to it with the uncertainty anger adds to the mix?"

"So how's it going, my young turk?" Cobra was about to start his shift and relieve Capmaster.

"Not so well, Sensei, and with all due respect, I am no longer young." They both smiled.

"I only meant in the ways of the Gai-jin. What troubles you?"

"My shot is blocked, and if I select another view, my victim will notice and log off denying me the ban."

"Remember, the third dogma. Recite."


"The shot is the killer, the killed, and the kill zone."

"What have you forgotten?"

"Nothing, the kill zone is denying me, Sensei."

"Is it? Describe it"

"The room, the chimes, the floor, the walls, and the windows."

"Then you do not see everything."

"Oh, yes. The people."

"Then you do not see everything." he repeated.

Then it dawned on him. The wind was blowing the chimes into
his shot. The people! Babyboo had her arms about her, heading toward the window nearest the chimes. She reached out for the windows and began to close it, as it was getting cold. The wind!

He flicked his thumb on his deck, and a red card flipped up into the air, as if waiting for something. He swithched the deck into his left hand. Babyboo closed the window, and the chimes slowly swung back perpendicular to the ground. The card started to fall towards the floor. Cap extended his left knee forward, and streched his right foot as far behind as he could. He stuck his index and middle finger out and the card began to fall through the vee the fingers made. In a motion that lasted a fraction of a second, the fingers snatched the card, his hand went next to his ear, then shot out at an angle parallel to the floor. The card made a high pitched whine and sped toward its quarry.

Aero laughed at Bazooka, and flashed his middle finger in derision at him. He then heard the last sound he would hear on this forum, a high pitched whine. He turned toward the sound, but only saw Capmaster in his kill stance. He blinked and realized a thin red line was flickering toward him. At the last moment, he realized what was happening. It was too late to avoid the kill card, and opened his mouth in total shock.

The card sliced through his two front teeth, through his upper palate, cleaved his brain stem in half, cut through the bottom of his skull, exited the back of his head, and lodged deep into the wall behind him. Babyboo screamed, several gurus shouted, "Kill shot, kill shot!" Aero blinked, and slowly slumped to the floor. Several newbies cheered, and Capmaster stood erect again, waiting for his mentor's critique of his attack.

"Don't forget to fill out the shift log, Young Turk." He heard Cobra say.

"Sensei, did you forget something?"

"What would that be?"

"My critique, Sensei."

"And when do I critique you?"

"Whenever I do something wrong, Sensei." Cap answered.

"That's right." He winked, then walked away.

Cap's chest almost burst with pride. He then noticed Tommyknocker coming by with a wheelbarrow, a mop and pail. "Oh, sorry about the mess."

"No worries, Sir. Tuesdays I change the canvas and wet mop anyway." He grinned.

1) I'm not a young turk, but rather an old fart
2) aero wasn't banned for those posts or any others ...it was for something else
3) It wasn't my first kill shot ...by a long shot (pun intended)

We obviously have a natural tale master in our midst.

That story has inspired me to branch out from the Eskimo Amputee porn and Longshoreman/Performing Seals porn industry a bit. Babyboo can add these to the porn site she operates for us.

Here in New Mexico, the Indians (yes, that's what they prefer despite what PC pundits say) make lots of homemade pottery and sculptures. Among the favorites is the "Storyteller". In this vein, I am planning to contract with several Jemez Indian Pueblo artisans to make some "Tommyknocker Teller" items for us to sell. The Jemez use a rich red clay for their pottery. Here are a couple of examples of what I had in mind:
