People who think spyware is a virus or a browser hijack is a virus.

People who think the computer is a game as in "you're always playing on the computer" as in my wife...but she doesn't bitch when the money from the videos comes in does she?

Tech support...I mean seriously... what a joke.

People who ask you to fix their computer and think it will only take 5 minutes.

People who do not grasp the concept of RAM and why they can't run a game on their 733 mhz, 128 MB of RAM box, when the game clearly states minimum requirements to be much higher.

People who are technologically challenged...well...really just people in general.

Family members who have discovered remote desktop. "Somethings wrong with my machine, can you go in and fix it?"

  5. IT departments that treat highly qualified proffesional programmers in the same way as they treat temporary admin staff. Locking down your PC and network access to the point where you have to ask a member of the IT department for permission to install a vital piece of development software.

I hate that, especially when I know more about PC's than they do!

My father calls me with questions like... "I'm in internet explorer and I go to this page. After a while I get an error message. What is the problem?"

"Dad, what is the error message?"

"Oh, I don't know. You are the one who's supposed to know all this stuff."

They were teaching me that stuff back in the 7th grade. Basic, Cobol, Fortran, etc. Flowcharts, using spiffy new TRS-80s, cassette tape backups and all the rest of the pre-3.5" floppy stuff glory days.

Then I discovered pot and Atari 2600 and lost interest in everything.

People who call tech support and ask. I don't understand this can you show me how?

I never asked support questions like that when I was learning. If your computers not broke you don't need tech support. You need to learn to use it on your own or take a class.

But it wasn't my fault, you see. I was young and impressionable, and it was just there.

That's what middle school was supposed to be all about, right?

    Back on topic --

Most annoying thing about computer users...everybody is a ******* know-it-all it seems. Especially the ones who really don't know much of anything.

I know as a little annoying.

I know that some people just don't know anything about computers all because of as not computer literate or not technically minded of the machine.

I know some people wouldn’t know what the operating system is and what it is for?

Some wouldn’t know what the drivers are and what they are for?

Some wouldn’t know where the files are stored in the PC?

Some just don’t know the difference of a network drive and a normal local drive?

Some of these people wouldn’t know what megabyte is or gigabyte is?

They wouldn’t know the data rate speed is?

They wouldn’t have the comprehension of this, the Mbps?

They wouldn’t know what downloading and uploading is?

I have a friend who thinks that I can get a virus from a recorded CD-R or a DVD-R disc?

He doesn’t know what Netscape is and he thinks it is coffee?

    Well, they have to learn.

    Another thing on inexperienced users:

Once at non-profit charity organization there was an inexperienced computer user who deleted her email account or mucked up the setting to receive messages.

As a result of this problem, the computer was unable to receive and send messages for her.

Poor office worker and the boss had to get a computer technician from outside to get her messages back.

They didn’t know how to restore it and they didn’t ask me. I was in accounting at the time having IT qualifications.

The boss knew that and she didn’t bother to ask me.

This as so costly for a non-profit company to get someone to fix something so simple. All because of email settings on an email client, MS Outlook.

The hourly rate to hire someone cost them something like $120.00 an hour and can be more.

I just noticed now at that former workplace do now employ an IT systems administrator just like me.

It is about time they got someone on the spot to help on computer problems.

    I'm afraid I don't follow with you.
At any rate, most big papers use 200dpi for photos, and at images sizing of about 5x7" to 9x12". A JPEG of this "size" is usually under 4MB. A bit less is RAR'd up.

Most pro digital cameras output 72dpi files with insane inch size. You simply alter to 200 or 300, and the inches change in relation to the DPI.

    .........Anyway.....
People that think they are special because they passed the "A+ TEST" but still don't know the difference between DSL and cable broadband. Or don't know what spyware is. (Did you know this test is given in hgh schools to 15-year-olds? Those are probably the punks online that think this is something to brag about. I've seen the test. It's worthless.)

We'll go one further. I love people that a "MS CERTIFIED" and don't know that CTRL+C is for copy and CTRL+V is for paste. Great certification! Certifiably stupid!

People that ask, as said before, think you're "playing" on the computer. When you start to criticize their jobs as "playing" the get pretty defensive! Fuckwads. "You spend all morning playing around at that bank/store/lab/etc, why don't you get a real job?!" Excellent.

People that ask, as said before, if there is some "easier" way to do things. I tell them to take up lint collecting if they need something less challenging.

People that insist "Mac is better". I learned PASCAL on a Mac (saw some of you discussing programming!). I've seen more Mac bombs than BSOD's in my computer days. And they say "Mac doesn't crash". Bullshit. Mac is just different. I don't ever remember DOS crashing when I was doing BASIC or C! You know, what's sad is I don't remember any of that stuff after I graduated high school. I have a hard time writing BAT files these days, though I can do ASP pretty well.

People that think anything that goes wrong is a virus. Cannot find the file? Must be a virus. Computer turned off? Must be a virus. (Let's forget the surge!) Strange e-mails? Must be a virus. (Spam, idiot!) Forgot the save your work last time? Must be a virus.

People that think ERROR 404 is something they can fix. THE PAGE IS NOT F-ING THERE... GO AWAY !!!! Quit asking me "what to do".

The way they explained it to her is that a 72 dpi image is unacceptable beacuse the quality is terrible..... which if you have a large image and it's resized in inches is true. But they never mention actual size of images and how they can affect quality, just that it has to be 300dpi. In other words a 2000x2000 image at 300dpi is acceptable and a 2000x2000 iamge a 72dpi is uanacceptable. Same thing if it's only 100x100 if you follow their guidlines.

I think I get it now. They only told her half the equation. They'd rather have a 300dpi image that is 500x500 instead of a 72dpi image that is 100000x100000. Stupid.

Well it seems we all have the same type of gripes.. now my next gripe is not true for all IT pros.. but i have not once ever talked to an IT pro for HW or SW related issues regarding home HW or SW support that has even half the knoledge and ability i have with computers. ive asked and the level 1 support are just low techs that read off a script. but i know this and ask to speak to level 2 or better so i can have an intelegent conversation with some one.. lol well thats not always easy. i have never taken a computer class.. BUT i have been tinkering with computers and have read all kinds of books and have broken so many then had to fix them that i know i have more ablility then lots of them techs. (not all) (first computer was vic 20) :P learned basic by trial and error like every thing else..

    sorry got off track..

anyway.. the gripe is.. when i first got my cable modem i had disconnect issues. well knowing a bit about hardware and networking i would do the normal basic fixes but when the data light is off on the modem know its not the computer its either the modem or the node.. well i call and i tell them ok.. this is the deal and this is what i have already done.. ive spent 30 min working this and its not the regular issue. i unpluged i rebooted i checked cable yadda.. i swear 99% of the time after i say this. the damn tech will say.. ok first thing you need to do is unplug the modem.. WTF did you hear what i said? were you listning?

ok so the point is.. with no formal training i know more than any tech I have spoken to.. and not an IT pro.. just been doing it for 20 years. its to the point that my IT department will come to me now.. (mechanical engineer)

one more thing.. my boss had his personal HD crash. he gave it to an IT guy here at work to try to recover his data.. 2 weeks later the IT gave it back telling him it was lost.. sorry. well i said give me a go.. i took it home did a quick fdisk/format booted ran r-studio and with in an hour i had all his data recovered..

Of cource i made up some elaborate story but i got it all back and on dvdr the next day...

P.S. i told him the HD was toast but its working fine.. im using it in an old computer for img files. lol.. im going to give it back and say to him i fixed it.. here ya go..

gotta get them brown nose point in...

Sorry long random post i know.. im at work and keep getting side tracked.

Most people mean that the mac is more stable than a pc, which is debateable.

marketing users are the worst for me,

warehouse guys that dont know much about computers i can handle

but the marketing guys that have to have the latest greatest phones, laptops, pdas, colour laser printers.... are annoying.

one user here wanted the use of a usb memory to take overseas,

when the user got there the user rang back saying that i gave the wrong one and its not compatible with their computers and the user needs to download all these files and dosnt know how.
well the user didnt take the cap off the memory stick.

The tower is NOT the hard drive.

The tower is NOT the modem.

Micro$oft is NOT an operating system.

    Micro$oft is NOT an application.

I really DON'T have 30min to explain to you over the phone how to fix something when you have no clue how you screwed it up. Try calling Auto Zone and saying 'My car just stopped working while I was driving, can you help me fix it?'

Just because you didn't go to virus.com and click Install, doesn't mean that you just CAN'T have a virus. I have better things to do than putting it there so you can pay me to remove it.

You get what you pay for. You wanted to skimp on the memory and processor and now you wonder why everything is so slow. THEN you want to know what you can do to speed it up without spending any money. NOT gonna happen.

Here's something your average computer user doesn't seem to understand. For the most part computers don't really wear down like most mechanical items. Your PC is not getting 'old and slow.' Your PC can do exactly what is used to do when you got it, just as fast as it did when you got it. All you have to do is unload all the crap you bogged it down with or run the recovery CD. It's not 'aging,' you just expect more and more out of it.

More to come (this could be a daily thing for me).
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

Tell me about it. I can still remeber the first time I ever used a G4 and opened up Illustrator on it. Crashed everytime I made a circle. It wasn't just a crash were the program closed, the whole machine just froze up. Ever try running After Effects 5 in OSX?

    ding ding ding ding ding!

Trying to open a Pagemaker document and send it to the print server - no editing, no nothing, just open and print. Total freeze, needing hard reboot. Finally had to take the document over to the PC, open it on Pagemaker there and send it to the server. no problems at all, even with a Mac-oriented (ie no extension) file.
