  1. hey guys I was just wondering. I have two avi files about 700mb each and I wanted to join them together with virtual dub mod into one big avi, but then I have a question to ask. Is there anyway I can encode this one big avi file, keeping dvd quality and keeping it to one disk? If yes is this the best way to do it? Please reply, thanks.

convert to dvd? then click on CONVERT here to the left. The newbie all-in-one dvd converters are pretty good.

or do you mean reencode to avi/divx/xvid on one cd? if so, no you can't keep the quality.

Again: (second time today) Why join? If your goal is a DVD, the joining comes when you author, and is completely "transparent". Just take 2 mpg's and author them as 2 parts of the same title, and it will play seamlessly.
As for encoding, and keeping quality, it all depends on the total playing time how much, and at what quality you can fit on a disc.
Use "any" mpeg2 encoder like TMPGEnc, QuEnc, MainConcept if you're trying to do a DVD.
If you still want it as AVI, there's no way to keep the quality while making it occupy half the disc space...

  5. I want these two avi files to come out as one dvd on the same disc, with minimum amount of quality loss.

Then don't join. Add the total playing time for your 2 AVIs to calculate DVD mpeg bit rate to use, using a bit rate calculator, then encode at this bit rate (lower it a bit for good measure), one avi at a time.

  7. ok so following these steps will allow me to lose minimal quality right? Also once I have my two seperate mpegs at the end of the encoding stage, I just add them into an authoring prog and it will join them for me right?

Looks like a good starting point. You can also search the guides found here - they can be searched by tool.
