  1. I bought a CyberHome Dvd player (CH-DVD 300) in January this year... and yesterday I was playing a Dvd when the image dispeared. I tried to reconect the cable but the image didnt show up... The problem is not the cable because I changed it, the sound came out but the image didnt. And the problem is not the TV either because I connect the cable in the Y output and the Image came out, but in black and white. Does anyone know what seems to be the problem with the Video Out output?? Hope someone can help me. Thanks a lot David

I have this same model. And it is a very low end player. Not known for dependability.

I noticed this weekend I could not get a picture out of the r/b/y or progressive outputs. So I had to use s-video instead.

Maybe these players just konk out piece by piece, and mine is the compotent outs, yours is another issue.

Very sad, but I am not surprised. This usin has less then 10 hours on it, and I need it for PAL conversions.

I have a few of these devices. They do seem to work on many formats. I think that the reason they don't last long is that they origionally came with an on-off sw. In an effort to save money, the later versions did't. After a few failures I noticed that my units still seemed warm after being turned off. I also heard from a few people including a factory tech. that to insure any longevity from the units you should unplug them when when not in use. Newer versions may have overcome this problem. Since I have been unpluging the units- no problems

Unplug it. I've had problems with everything I've ever bought. Nothing is perfect. Try the simple things to fix.

  6. I bought mine specifically to watch my PAL DVDs on NTSC television, and that's all I use it for. I keep it unplugged when not in use. It cost me less than $50, so the poor construction and low durability are not unexpected.

I picked up one of these about 3 months ago at Sam's for 40 bucks. It's been largely reliable, and it plays everything I've thrown at it. I bought it mainly for VCD/SVCDs. It freezes up a lot on (S)VCDs, but I think that's partially due to noncompliant discs. I haven't really noticed any problems at all with DVD playback.

But it does do some weird things. The one that I really hate most is that it has a 'memory' which causes it to remember that it reached the end of a (S)VCD, and so it will absolutely not restart the disc. Further, it even seems to remember the last disc in its tray. If I stop the disc and can't restart it, I take the disc completely out of the unit, close the unit, turn off the power, turn it back on, open it and reload the same disc, it still remembers the disc and won't play it! I have to take the disc out and load an entirely different disc, then take that second disc out and reload the first one in order to reset it and play it again. Weird. Anyway, I did finally find an option on the menu to turn off the memory.

Also, sometimes there's just no audio. None. Total silence, for no apparent reason. Nothing I can do to bring it back. I push all kinds of buttons and unplug and replug all kinds of cables. I can only wait for it to come back, which it eventually does. Actually, this has only happened twice.

All in all, I can't say I'm unhappy with what I got for my 40 bucks.

    Today, I picked up a Philips DVP-642 8)

I repair TV's, VCR's,DVD's etc for a living and the advice given to unplug something is 100% correct. These units suffer from heat and the longer they are pluged in the more damage is caused. Please also think about how you use these when in use, the worst thing you can do is to stack them on top of each other, all that happens is that as you will all know heat rises, the result being that the machine on top of a stack becomes an oven and suffers likewise. Arange equipment on their own shelf's to allow good air flow, and keep away from heat sources such as room heaters etc.

So I left mine plugged in (not on) and not in use for 6 months. Last week I could not get progressive scan output. Does this mean the progressive out is now permantly shot? Or it may ome back?

As a rule when a fault occurs it would be permanent, only on very rare occasions would it work again, even then the fault could return also.
Do remove the the power to the player, wait 5 min, then power up again, this will allow the player to re-boot, just in case the problem was caused by a faulty boot. This is very rare though.
