I use Zonealrm... www.zonelabs.com, free for just the firewall. Make sure you download and install it before going on the net. Or some other product, the firewall is important.

I'm running Mcafee 2004 as my virus protection, no complaints. I've heard nothing negative about AVG just praise.

You should also get some good spyware apps, ad-aware www.lavasoftusa.com and spybot (do a search) top the list. Both free

Running a unpatched version of XP on the net without a firewall is opening it up to many malicious viri. When I say on the net I mean simply connecting, that's all you need to do. At the very least I hope you had the XP firewall running.

When reinstalling XP my advice has always been, first install a good firewall and your virus protection before connecting. Immeditley install all the critical updates from MS after connecting.

just my personal preference, but I use AVG anti-virus--along with Outpost Firewall-no problems whatsoever...

also run Spybot and Ad-Aware every so often...

EDIT: also running firewall built into XP SP2...

I was reluctant at first to do the SP2 thing too...even had problems getting it in the first place...but after installing, still no problems at all...

I too *used* to use a "free for me" version of norton...in the end, it caused my W98 to completely crash...so found the free AVG~been using it ever since...
