Don't expect quality with portable VCD players..

There are no really good portable VCD players, unless you count those portable DVD players that are VCD-compatible. I don't have any experience with the Supertek provided in the link above, but I owned an Avex DM-5, and I currently own a Napa DAV-311.

Although I can play VCDs I've made on my own with TMPGEnc without all the stuttering problems others have experienced, I've found the portable(s) I('ve) have(had) play pressed VCDs much, much better and with a clearer picture.

If you're looking to buy a portable VCD player to play burned VCDs, you should strongly reconsider it, or revise your expectation of quality sharply downward.

  6. Well, I'm mainly going to play pressed CDs not burned. So I take it that the portable will work okay (I don't have much room since it's going to be a college dorm, that's why I can't really go for the Apex player since my room is stuffed with PS2 & XBOX already)

A portable VCD player should do well in a dorm room. Don't spend too much money on it.

I'm not a fan or follower of gaming consoles, but doesnt Sony PlayStation 2 support VCD? If so, you already have a VCD player without having to a) spend more money, or b) lose more dorm room real estate.

I recommend picking up a used notebook pc. You can get a decent one for under $200. I picked up an IBM ThinkPad 760XL 166Mhz MMX, w/128MB RAM, 1GB HD, ext. floppy, internal CDROM, all for $200.

And since this formfactor (the 750, 755, 760 line was very prolific) is very common, you should not find any difficulty getting add-ons.

They have removable harddrives so you can set up a smaller capacity HD that is specifically tuned for playing VCDs.

I'm in the process of doing that right now.
