  1. Hi
I am looking at 2 things:
    1) a software to convert WAV/MP3 to MIDI format (free software)
    2) A software that works line Sound recorder (on our computer accessories--entertainment). The problem is that windows accessories software allows me to recrd only upto 60 seconds and I wanted to record a song that I hear from an online site (while it gets played) and continue record it.

    1) do a google search on "wave to midi", or a forum search - we've had a few threads on this in the last few weeks. they are out there, but the results are difficult even on a monophonic, single-instrument source file. If you are trying to use a source file with multiple instruments, you will probably find the results disappointing.

    2) Audacity is freeware, cross platform and pretty good. Will record from your line in, or any source you can set from your audio card. AAA Real Recorder and Total Recorder will both record online audio or radio broadcasts.

  3. When I was younger back in the early 1990's I played around with MIDI by creating a DSP based instrument that implemented the MIDI spec that connected up to my ATARI 1040ST. MIDI files just store note and instrument information like play middle C with a volume of 127 using channel 3, set channel 3 to insturment 15. The files are mostly press a key, lift a key. How to convert a sampling of an orchistra playing 50 instruments into individual instruments with key down, key up commands blows me away. I just don't believe the technology exists. Even extracting the data from a Sex Pistals CD would be non-trival.

I did a google search and now I see very simple conversions of a single instrument to MIDI. This I believe is possible with some FFTs but I would guess that it screws up a bit. I believe the general case is way out there.

audio to midi progs are scarce, and good ones are non-existent. the general misconception here is that midi IS an audio format, but it is essentially nothing more than a text file. think of a player piano - the sound you hear is audio, but the paper sheet with the holes cut out to tell the piano what to play is similar to midi. midi is a set of instructions that tells a sampler or synthesizer what to play; what instrument, what notes, and how to play those notes (loud, soft, quarter note, dotted eighth note, etc). it's a one way conversion. it would be like taking a jpg image of a collage and trying to re-create the original layered photoshop document out of it. it's not impossible, but it's not going to be very good.
