Yes this player does both NTSC and PAL. The rgion free hack is real easy to apply, so it will play almost any disc you throw in there. The video quality on DVD does suffer a bit but when you buy a player for $70 or so, you can't really complain. No other poblems so far with it.

I just got done (5 min ago) watching a DVD on this player and the quality was excellent. I watched an XVID AVI last night and the quality was just about as good as a DVD.Anyone else watching would not have been able to tell it wasn't a DVD.
Now I just wish I could figure out how to convert my DVD's to XVID with that quality. I didn't convert the one I watched last night.
Anyways, back to the player, no overscan problems. I have only tried NTSC.
And it was only $70.00. -
dts is not dolby sound. most players support dts but most output it as dts and then must your audio receiver support dts.

When compared to my sony, video quality is not as good. I watched the same movie on both and the phillips was not as good, noticable atifacting, had trouble with dark colors. But if your going to hook this up to a older big screen, you won't notice the difference. I have not updated the firmware yet, maybe I will try that.

ok guys i got it,,pretty awesome,,only the dvd quality doesnt seem as good as my old GE player,,but plenty good enough to get used to,,,,,,question about the square pixel thing,i read about havin to use mpeg modifier to change pixel shape on some avi's,,,is there a program that will let me know if i have to do this,,i tried gspot and yyet another avi,,but neither says anything about the pixels,,,thanks

The program you are looking for that can (I think) fix the square pixel problem is at http://www.moitah.net. The manual to the Philips 642 player does state what it won't accept for Divx.
