Could you give me your advice on a good DV video camera that could do analog-digital passthrough conversion on-the-fly. Preferably with a horiz. resolution of 720.

    Any personal experiences?

Is there any place in this site where I could find this info?

    TIA

From experience, the Sony TRV22 dv cam is an excellent contender.
It provider very good quality DV - to - AVI passthrough quality.

In fact, I'm amazed, between the comparisons w/ my ADVC-100 and the TRV22
    cam.
I have not done any actual test comparisons of the two above, but FWIW, if
you are serious enough, and have other needs thant what the ADVC-100 can
do for you, then the TRV22 is probably your best solution (based on experience)

    Good luck,

  3. I have a Canon Optura 10(miniDV) and it produces great video,it's an older model but you can still buy it for around $400USD.
You can find other analog passthrough camcorders HERE.

  4. I have a Sony DCR-PC101. It works great and I love the passthrough.
If I was to get another camera, I would probably be looking at 3CCD cameras for better low light performance. DV cameras fall behind the old VHS in this due to the smaller optics.
One thing I love about some of the Sony's is the touchscreen display. Makes it so much easier and faster to change settings while your still filming.

    Thought they all do 720?

I decided to buy a new Digital8 camera to convert old Video 8 and Hi8 stuff to DVD. I recently got a DCR-TVR361. It has analog-digital pass through, night shoot and a memory stick slot.

I’m disappointed with its low light performance because my older CCD-TVR608 Hi8 was better. Finally I’m not trilled with the touch screen display, but you know what they say about opinions.

    Hi guys.

yeah, I also like the touch-screen feature of my TRV22 cam. At first, you
hate it, then, once you figure out its hidden techniques, you almost don't
want to go back to the manu hard pressing button, which are usually in the
    wrong places anyways.

And now, for a little OT here ...

I'm also thinking about getting me a Dig8 or High8 cam. But just for my
8mm tapes. I have a box or too full of them, and I don't want to run them
through my old 8mm cam because the heads are bad (dirty among other
things) and it only has Composite connection. Also, because of the line noise
in my captures, (they too, are pretty dirty) I want nothing but the best in my
transfers ( 8mm home footage - to - DVD ) and only DV can provide this
FWIW.., I finally got my pc to recignize my DV cam, but only RsDvCap.exe can
reciginize and produce a video in a window for me. Even in low-light conditions,
the source (to my amazement) was superb. It works, but only in Type 1 AVI files.
    For now though, it works.
    .
But, I was so amazed ( its ben a while since I last saw any home-footage through
my DV cam and onto my PC in DV .AVI format ) at how crystal clean the video
was on my pc (inside virtualdub) No noise and No discoloration. This is
something that an Analog Capture card can *not* produce if I capture it from my
OLD 8mm cam through Composite connections.

    FWIW to note here..

However, in the short tests I ran last night, I found that going from an
Analog source to DV (via passthrough) was very good, but ONLY if there
are NO NOISE in your source. Some examples of Noise are VHS (even
commercial tapes) and noisey Antenna signal ( which mine has ) results in
a slightly lesser quality once through a DV passthrough conversion.
    .
So, my hunch is like this. If you have 8mm tapes and a High 8 (DV) that can
read these 8mm tapes, and because you are not going through any other type of
connectors (Composite) and Wires, you will (or should) get optimum quality
    conversion from those 8mm tapes.
    .
I really need to try this out.
    .
But, to be sure, my question is this..

    * What type of dig8 / high 8 cam do I need to get ??

    Thanks guys,
