I converted an XVID avi (688x384) to a standard VCD file using mpeg2enc. The resulting VCD is much darker than the XVID. Although, the XVID file (captured from HDTV) was dark to begin with given that most of the show takes place at night.

I'm pretty cluelss about video conversion. I just let ffmpegX do it's thing. So, how can I get ffmpegX to increase the brightness of the output VCD?

  2. It could be a bug in the colorspace handling of the Quicktime decoder. Try to disable "Decode with Quicktime".

Okay, I'll give that a try. Will disabling "Decode with Quicktime" affect the output VCD in any other way? For instance, will it still have the widescreen black bars?

Also, if I disable "Decode with Quicktime," what will ffmpegX use to decode the XVID file? I hope it doesn't use whatever the fast VCD (VCD ffmpeg) setting uses because the resultings files always have out-of-sync audio for me.

  4. 1/ Letterboxing will be available but only for 16:9, not 2.35:1
    2/ It will use ffmpeg

Disabling "Decode with Quicktime" didn't do much. The output VCD is still 15% darker than the XVID file.

Oh well, I just watch this one on my computer.
