Hopefully someone can shed some light on a problem i've recently
noticed.
I'm trying to convert a few Xvid encoded file to dvd standard mpeg.
Whats happeneding is that the converted files play fine, but about
5 or 10 minutes into the file, the audio dropsout for the duration
of the file.
I'm using Canopus Procoder V1.01.35,
as well as Tmpgenc V2.58
The avi files, after i ran them thru avicodec, show the following specs:
Video: Xvid mpeg4 (1087 kps, 25.0fps
Audio: AC3 DVM (384 kps, 4800Khz, 5channels
Anyone with some help?,
thanks,
Win

Hi winman42,
I've never used Canopus, so I can't comment on that.
As for TMPGEnc, I don't believe that it can handle AC3 as an audio input format.
Extract the AC3 from your Xvid and encode the video only. You can then add in the AC3 audio in during authoring to DVD (assuming you're going that far).
Hope that helps. Good luck...There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

thanks for the reply...well, Tmpgenc is accepting the file, and as i said,
its playing fine for 10 mins or so, then the audio stops.
What would you recommend to separate the ac3 audio from the video?
I'm assuming i'll do that, then use the separate ac3 audio, when I
import the encoded video file into Ulead dvd workshop, or something
similar.

Hi winman42,
When you're encoding the file in TMPGEnc, set it to do "ES (Video only)".
As for extracting the audio, I believe that VirtualDub will do this for you - set it to "Direct Stream Copy" in the "Audio" settings and save to filename.ac3. If I'm wrong, then there's guides covering Xvid / Divx -> MPEG conversion with AC3 audio - that'll be something to read up on.

Well, i took the advice given, used Virtual dub and stripped out
the ac3 track, then i used tmpgenc to convert ONLY the video
track.
I imported both into Ulead dvd workshop, and it worked fine.
When playing the files in Workshop, it was horribly out of sync,
but i burned the disc to dvd-rw anyway, because i was curious
to see if the ac3 tracks worked.
When i played them back, they were insync!! and the 5.1 tracks
were retained.
The only problem now is that i have 2 video files. The 1st worked
fine, but when trying to import the 2nd ac3 track, ULEAD gives
an error telling me i have a file format mismatch. Not sure why
the first file worked, but NOT the 2nd. I've tried restripping the ac3
track again, but it still fails. COuld it be that the AVI file is corrupt?
and if so, how can i fix it?
thanks,

I can't remember if saving as "Direct Stream Copy" will include the deleted frames. Can someone shed any light on this to help winman42? If it's not the way to go, I'm guessing that saving will have to be done using the correct video and audio codecs, but will that preserve the 5.1 AC3?There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

OK, again, thanks for the reply. Here is the latest:
Ulead does support ac3 5.1, so thats not an issue.
What i did was check both avi files with VirtualDub,
and they both were fine. So i took the offending ac3 file, and used ac3FIX on it. AC3FIX reported
that the orignal ac3 file was fine, but it created a
new file, which when loaded into Ulead worked!
So i finally got i all to work, so again thanks for
guys for all the help!!
