  1. Like it says, My 2nd hard drive stopped spinning. It also makes a series of musical beeps that actually come from the hard drive. It is a Maxtor 120 GB, you know the ones marketed as 100GB with a Free extra 20GB.

Anyways I need to get it spinning again, because I don't want to spend a grand on data recovery. Thanks, and please help.

You can try the "freezer" trick that I've read about...
Stick the drive in the fridge or freezer for a bit then reinstall...

You're not serious are you? I know this is like asking you if you closed the barn door after the horse got out but you did back up your critical data didn't you? Well ... that may be a subject for later. Like makntraks suggested I'd try the freezer trick and if that worked I'd get my critical data off as fast as I could.

  5. Why don't you call Maxtor? Maybe they have a suggestion?

It's cheaper for me to spend $50 on a backup HD than $1000 on data recovery.

You need to buy a better hard drive next time.

Maxtors are on the low end of hard drives.

Give it a whack with your hand. I am serious.
I have started many a stalled harddrive that way.
Sometimes the spindle bearings begin to
deteriorate. Small shards of bearing jam the
spindle. A whack will some time allow the shards
to become dislodged and allow the platter to start
up. Then, get your data off ASAP. The beeps you
are hearing is the data arm looking for the toc.
It will do it and then time out.
    Hope this helps you.
