Anyone suggest how i do this? I get an error from VirtualDub in the vain of "No suitable compressor can be found". Would be much appreciated if someone could suggest another way around this.

If you're intend to convert avi ac3 to mp2 (vcd) then
use graphedit. Install the ac3 codec , open avi with graphedit, add wave dest and file writer filters and save the wave (two channel) on disk . Then do the wave to mp2 conversion with your favorite tool.
