I am using Womble for my edits on Vob files captured using a JVC DVD Recorder. I know if I use it to just clip out the parts I don't want, then generate a file for Authoring and Burning it won't re-encode my video so I don't lose quality.

I have some concert video from HDNet and I'd like to clip out some songs before authoring. To make things look a bit better I'd like to also have Womble fade in and out from black on each scene.

If I do this or use other transitions with Womble does it re-encode anything so I'm loosing quality on my video? If so is the loss ony on the transition? Any guides available for using transitions with Womble? I have viewed a couple for clip and paste and have no problems with basic stuff like that.

    Thanks.

  2. There is no way to make transistions without reencoding. However, I'm pretty sure (although not positive) that Womble will only encode the area around the transition. A simple experiment should be able to tell (you can pretty much tell by how long things take, if no other way).

  3. womble will do a direct stream copy untill it gets to the transition..then it will reencode and then go right back to direct stream copy as soon as the transition is over.

basically any kind of transition you do will be subject to this, whereas simple cutting/rearranging will result in a direct stream copy.

Additionally, when you are using Womble, from the Export menu, when you press the button to create the file, there is also a button that says "Details". Clicking this, you can see what portions are re-encoded, vs which is direct stream copy.

The process gets much slower (in the preview) during transitions and re-encoding. I like relatively quick transitions, and do not obsess about the quality being super-precise, so it works for me.

The audio from my DVD recorder is AC3, If I only cut and splice Womble doesn't change this.

If I use transitions will womble still maintain the audio as AC3?

    Thanks.

  6. the AC3 will just be directly copied over. you can verify by using the "details" option cited above.

I also wanted to specify that the direct stream copy will only occur if you keep the same resolution..etc. If you decide to change res/bitrate then eVERYTHING is getting re-encoded. So this is where it's important to capture at whatever resolution you want the final product to be.
