  1. Hi guys,

I am using dvdshrink to re-author some of my dvds (just the main event). I would like to create a menu with access to chapter but would like to preserve the subtitles. Is there a program out there that supports this? I tried tmpgenc DVD author but it does not support subs. Would you recomend another method?

    Thanks in advance.

please post dvd to dvdr here. it includes reauthoring.

you can use dvd-lab but you must manually use ifoedit to fix the subtitle streams.

OK this may not be what you need, but it's getting closer, 2COOL has a guide to enable the Skip and Back buttons on a shrunk DVD for jumping titles .
    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61238
This will only allow you to jump from title to title, I don't think it can be used for chapters.
Other than that, you may be able to do it entirely by hand, but that might be challenging! If I were to try it, I'd extract the chapter menu video from the VTSM domain in the original DVD, then I'd use PgcEdit to add that as a new PGC in the movie VTS of your reauthored DVD. You would then need to change the button commands (possibly with the registered version of menuedit) and the pre/post commands in pgcedit to jump to the right location in your movie. Also, you'd have to add a way to get to that "chapter menu" from the title menu (for example by making that new menu the "root menu" in PgcEdit).l This would probably not be very easy/simple (and there's probably tons I'm forgetting). But if you have time and want to learn about the DVD structure, you could try it (and post your results!).

  4. The following approach works fine in my tests:

Join the Vob files from dvdshrink either with a tool like TotalCommander or from the commandline with
    Code:
    copy /b VTS_01.vob + VTS_02.vob + VTS_03.vob + VTS_04.vob newfilm.mpg
Reauthor the resulting big mpeg file: newfim.mpg (including all audio and subtitle streams) with GUI for DVDAuthor, or dvdauthorgui to create the menu(s).

PgcEdit has a macro that enables you to modify the DVD created by shrink to enable the "previous chapter" and "next chapter" buttons of the remote, based on 2COOL's guide I previously mentioned.
In PgcEdit it's in the menu: Macros/DVDShrink Remote Buttons

It won't give you a chapter menu, but it'll enable you to skip chapters...

Use Subrip https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=102#comments to preserve the subtitles from the VOB files. It's an awesome tool.

I tried to put back the original chapter menu into the shrink-reauthored DVD using PgcEdit and it did work in the two cases that I tried. It's not very simple but it'll give you a chance to understand the DVD format better (if you think you want to go for it). I posted some details here:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83389 but they're by no means step-by-step instructions, so you need to be familiar with PgcEdit and DVD structures/commands...

P.S. The subtitles were preserved of course! The whole process does not modify the VOB files (other than copying a small menu VOB from the original DVD to the reauthored one).

  8. Thank you guys. IŽll give dvdauthorgui a try. I have many dvd-r with the main movie only without a menu (I can jump from chapter to chapter), some of them have more than one audio and subtitles, a menu (or menus) with access to chapters is enough for me. IŽll test it and let you know.

    Regards.
