if i convert from DivX to SVCD (MPEG2?) is the resulting file smaller, larger or the same size (roughly) as the DivX avi?

well i think (i may be wrong) that burning a vcd goes by time. i think its 10MB per 1 Minute of film. For SVCD its also the same. The only one with different way's are x(s)vcd's.Ofcourse you would have known this if you had click the link to the left explaining the VCD,SVCD format's.But you'll learn, you'll learn.
To answer your question, the file size is larger because that's how svcd's and vcd's work.10MB per 1 minute of VCD or SVCD video.
One quick example.I had the movie Shrek'o and its was 200MB in Divx.avi When I encoded it to VCD it came out as around 780MB (78 Minutes).K.Hope this helps.

SVCD is about 10-20 MB/minute and most divx are about 5-10 MB/minut so NO the file size will not be smaller but you can play the svcd on most standalone dvd players...
