As an encoder, the Fraunhofer codec that comes with XP is limited to 56 kbps, so I figured I would uninstall Fraunhofer via the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel and then install Lame. Since uninstalling Fraunhofer, I seem unable to get Lame ACM to work from within VDub...this is bizarre, but I can think of no other explanation.

How can I reinstall the Fraunhofer codec, in order to test this theory? Anyone know where to download the installer?

  2. I see that you've already solved your problem in the other thread, but the Fraunhofer codec is used by Windows to DECODE MP3s as well. There is no reason to uninstall the Fraunhofer codec, even though it is limited in encoding (though not if you install WMP10).

Consider the Lame ACM codec as ENCODER ONLY.

I want to add a question here as it is really related to my problem.

I've installed LameMP3 while keeping the Fraunhofer advanced codec in WinXP.
I can't use the bitrates and frequencies of the Lame codec into my WinFast PVR software (came with Leadtek TV capture card). What I wanted to do is use MP3 sound on the fly when recording TV programs. It is only possible to use the 56kbps, 22.5kHz which I asume are the max from Fraunhofer.

Now, I installed the WMP10 that is supposed to add full functionallity but chosing higher spec don't work again. Is it possible in some way to distinguish which frequencies come from Lame and which from the new WMP10 install? Is it only internal support for the WPM10 or the encoder can be used for other aplications?

  4. I would suspect that your app limits the possible choice of ACM codecs...

The Fraunhofer codec is referred inside windows as "MP3" while the Lame codec refers to itself as "LameMP3". See the below picture.

Same thing happened to me. Still 56kbps max after installing WMP10.
Apparently you have to install the new codec separately, like in this thread.
