I simply want to be able to decompress mp3 from within VirtualDub.

I have installed Lame ACM (first tried 3.96.1, then 3.92), but when I try to do a simple full processing of an avi with mp3 audio, I get the message:

"Error initializing audio stream decompression: The requested conversion is not possible"

When I view the AVI Information within VirtualDubMod, it says the Audio tag is "0x0055, Decodable", but the Compression is "Unknown, tag 0055".

    GSpot 2.51b2 proposes 2 audio codecs, "AC3:Lame MP3 codec engine" (LameACM.acm) and "MPEG Layer-3 Decoder" (L3CODECX.AX).

When I try to render within GSpot, the L3CODECX.AX works, but the LameACM.acm produces an error along the lines of "failed to connect output pin of lame mp3 codec engine to input pin of default directsound device"

If I list audio codes within GSpot, 0x0055 has a description of "ISO".

It seems like this problem started when I uninstalled the Fraunhoffer MP3 Codec that came with Windows XP....

How did you uninstall the MP3 codec that came with XP?
On my XP system I just disabled it through device manager -> sound, video and game controllers -> audio codecs... by ticking do not use this codec.
On my system both the Lame and the Radium ACM MP3 codecs are installed and I've had no MP3 problems yet.
