I'm trying to reconcile the difference between recoding only the main movie versus creating a copy of the original DVD. That is, if I use Nero's Recode 2 (recent release) for copying only the main movie, I end up with a coaster as far as my stand alone Panasonic player is concerned ... but the movie will play fine with software players. However, if I copy the entire DVD (menus, features, etc), then the DVD will play correctly in any player. Can this be problem with the vintage of the Panasonic player (2years old) ... with using DVD+R media ... or not having found a software "compatibility" switch??

If burning a copy of the entire disk onto the same brand of media works, then you can probably rule out the player and media for the moment. I haven't used Recode for quite a while, as the latest version of DVD Shrink is a better proposition. It functions in a similar manner, so I suggest giving it a try. Use ReAuthor mode to put just the main movie on the disk and see if it plays. If so, wait for a bug fix for recode, or keep using DVD Shrink.

Thanx for your response. From what I gather, Nero's Recode 2 is the same as DVD Shrink ... which doesn't rule out testing it ... but I sure hate to make coasters from blank DVD+R media

I've never had a problem with "movie only" DVD's on any DVD player. I've never used anything but DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter.
The easiest way is to take one of your discs to a different player and test it.

Your point is well taken. Conceptually it may be easy ... but not so easy in practice ... if I found a another player which also did not play it, what would I conclude? More easy if I had neighbors surrounding me but I dont.

It's actually much easier, conceptually and otherwise, to ask if anyone has had this problem before ... and fixed it.

  6. You have two DVDs burned with the same burner on the same media. The movie only version produced by Nero Recode is unreadable while the complete disc version is OK. That's enough evidence for me to conclude that problem is with Nero Recode and should be reported to the publisher www.ahead.de

WHOA! No conclusions yet! I just tried the same thing with DVD Shrink, and my results are the same. It could be my player, OR it could be that I haven't yet found the right software switch for compatibility with my player. I am using the default settings, and I do note there being some type of compatibilty(?) switch. It was enabled for DVD Shrink, but disabled for Nero recode.

    Still a mystery

I believe the compatability switch you refer to is the deep burn checkbox, and won't solve your problem.

I am going to make an assumption here - you are using Nero to burn from both Recode (duh !) and DVD Shrink. Can I suggest you try two things, in this order

    1. Using DVD Shrink, reauthor just the main title of DVD. Write the results out to the hard drive in the DVD structure (Audio_TS and Video_TS directories). LOad up Nero and select DVD Video. Copy the contents of the video_TS directory created by Shrink into the video_TS directory in Nero's DVD Video template. Burn and test.

    2. If this still doesn't work, I would suspect Nero of being the cause. A quick test will bear this out. Go to the tools section and find DVD Decrypter. Download and install the latest version. Again, using DVD Shrink, reauthor the main title, but this time elect to burn using DVD Decrypter. Give this a test.

One last question - have you tried using a -R disk ?
