  1. I am thinking about getting this recorder since best Buy has them on sale this week. I have a couple questions I hope can be answered. Does this machine have a loop capability? In other words can I send video to the IEEE input(or any other input) have it go to an output for processing and send it back to the recorder for recording? If not, is there another solution that you may use. Also, what brand of DVD R/W is found to be most compatible? Thanks for your help and info.

This recorder really sucks, in regards to how it cooperates with blank media.

  3. Thanks for the tip Lordsmurf. I have been trying to read various comments about this unit and have found that it does have some problems with various brands of media. Hence the question....What brand of media seems to work best.

I could never get anything to work 100% reliable.

I had the unit less than 48 hours, I gave up, which is not something I do often. It treats -RW and +RW like write-once media too, aggravating as hell, and has no manual delete option.

Seriously, this recorder sucks. And overpriced.

You would do better investigating the new Sony if you insist on that brand, or go for a Pioneer, JVC (#1 rating from me and others), or LiteON (or a LiteOn clone).

  6. I 3rd that. Very few people have had success with this machine. I wasn't one of them.

I fourth that. I didn't own one, but I ruled it out as a candidate when I bought one.

It's overpriced (should have a HD for that money) and lacks a TBC.

The Sony spec sheet says this: "Variable Bit Rate Recording (60-360 Minutes)". Very liberal use of the term "Variable bitrate", since it's a block-select of a CBR depending on the length of the recording. :P

You're buying the "Sony" nameplate and a lot of self-hype by Sony.

  8. Assuming it's the Sony RDR-GX7 you mean i have owened this one for 6 months now and think it's great. I can record TV in 6 hour mode and it's clear as can be. When i transfer video from VHS i would never go more than 2 hour. As far as blank media goes you are right it sometimes treats RWs like Rs. However all is not lost. I find all you have to do is when you want to format the disc and it won't let you is open the drawer close it and let the machine reload and then you are set to go again. As for the fussy blank media tag i find that to be false. This machine has used every blank media i have put into it save for 1 kind. These are all the media i have used in it: Sony/Memorex/Maxell/Kodak/Ben Q/Fuji/Pine/E-Works. The only time i had any trouble was with the E-Works at the 6 hour mode doing a VHS transfer for a friend. Maybe it's me but i just don't have a media problem with it. As far as video quality goes maybe my expectations aren't as high as others here. I love this machine. The other unit i had was the Pioneer 310-s and took it back. I do wish though that it would also record the +R discs so it would do all the formats. Now all this being said my unit will probably crap out today. I am no expert on the subject but i'm just telling you what i know.

  9. Sony is the worst for having bad burners in there recorders. I like Panasonic for hard drives recorders. JVC is also very good if you do not want a hard drive recorder.
