    You can reinstall without formatting.

It would just replace the existing windows folder.

You would have to reinstall your programs though but your data will still be there.

If you do a re-install, any data under the My Documents folder will be ERASED, so back up those files first.

Actually the data will still be there.

There will be a ~next to the folder name.

  5. bazooka, are you 100% sure that my documents wont get erased?

i wish i saw that before i installed another copy of windows xp..

the reason why i installed another copy was because the original wouldnt start up, but using the second copy of winxp (installed to c:\windows2), i was able to copy everything from the first winxp into the new winxp.

now the problem is, i cant install some programs like Hide Files And Folders.

i think it's because it needs C:\WINDOWS, and not C:\WINDOWS2 (where my new copy of xp is installed, aka the one im using right now)

so you are saying i should have just installed a new copy of winxp on C:\WINDOWS? but it said the My Documents "may also" be deleted. thats why i got scared.

Yes. The data will stay intact if you do not format.

What will happen is the my documents folder will be recreated and there will be a sub-folder that will have a ~mark that will say jow blows stuff or whatever.

If you are that worried, just move the contents to another folder.

All that really happens is the previous windows install will be replaced, but you will need to reinstall your programs.

I have done enough installs to know.

As long as you do not format, you keep your data.
