I am trying to understand this and am confusing myself. I am going to use the bitrate calculator(java free donloaded ) for dvd calculation. I am going to use tmpgenc plus to convert my avi into mpeg2. I won't be including audio in the conversion (from what I read it is better not to). However I will be using an AC3 coverter, from tmpgenc dvd author, to convert from wave to AC3. As far as the bitrate calculator goes, it has a setting for audio to pick from 64,96,112,128, 160,192,224,256 kbit/s. That is were I am confused, what do I pick? I am confused![]()

128 kbps will give you decent audio quality. Higher bitrates will allow greater fidelity for your audio but most people cannot discern much difference above 192 kbps.
Keep in mind that when you use more bits for audio, you'll have fewer for the video.
