  1. Hey,

I figured since many of you come from different walks of life, I would try here. I looked on some auto message boards and the like, but couldnt find an answer.

I have a 2000 Sunfire GT and the check engine light came on yesterday. The manual says its an "exhaust system problem." i did a visual inspection of my exhaust and there doesnt seem to be anything wrong. There is no noise coming from the car. Could this be simply an Oxygen sensor or something a kin to that?

Any car buffs, feel free to answer

    Thanks

Your best bet, would be to replace the Oxygen sensor. About 90% of the time , it is the culprit. It's reletivly inexpensive and it's easy to replace. If that doesn't solve the problem, then it may be another sensor or a stuck EGR valve.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

  4. What is the code? Use a code reader & find out what the code says. A code reader can also reset that light. How many miles?

you can take it to Autozone and they have a little handheld that will tell them the code and they can tell you exactly what it is. But it's the oxygen sensor, I'd bet money on it.

Disconnecting your battery will reset the light. If it comes back quick it's very likely your O2 sensor.

probably O2 sensor. if not get a book and start checking all the sensors that have to do with exhaust. best way to go about fixing a car is start with the cheap parts first... your car should have an obdII plug, that should pretty much narrow down your prob. obdII reader is only $30-40 here in the states depends on how technical you want it to be for $200 you can mess with your settings

Get the actual code and look it up on Usenet. Then post the code and description and alleged remedy here. Also, how many miles (or KM in your case?) do you have on this car? Oxygen sensors don't last forever and it would have been my first guess anyway.
