Hey, the extra $4,450/month for modding doesn't go as far as you might think

  6. Yep I moved on Friday 24th, and this is my first post since then. Still no broadband at home so this is the first time I have even logged on for a week , I am round my mums using her PC. The move went well, but now the real work starts, completely gut the house and redecorate, bit of wiring and plumbing etc.

Been working on the house constantly for a week and have 1 more week off work, this is going to be a long old project but will be worth it in the end.

Well the move isnt going to happen this weekend after all. I don't know how an entire day wasn't long enough, but the paperwork wasn't finished so we won't close until Tues., which means we won't move until Wed. I have a feeling I won't be getting any sleep at all next week.

I've moved 9 times in my entire life, each time getting worse.

The last time we put our old house on the market, and arranged to have a new one built for us. That summer was the worst I recall because we didn't know if the old house would even sell, and if it did, where we would live until the new one was done.

I arranged a rental house and secured it with a deposit (which I ended up losing) in case we sold the old one right away. We didn't until closer to the new house being done.

Because of generosity of the new owners of our old house, we were allowed to stay in there an extra month, but we still ended up homeless for 5 days.

The solution: The four of us moved into my mother-in-law's 1-bedroom tiny little apartment, with her there ..and our pets at a kennel except for several aquariums with fish and turtles. What a mess!

And closing on the old house happened during jury duty for me. I was on a jury for a murder trial. I explained the closing to the judge and he announced in open court "The juror Capmaster has a house closing, so we'll break early for lunch so he can take care of that". If I could have sunk any lower in my chair I would have. A murder trial ...and he announces something so mundane. Nice judge ...we made the closing OK.

    Moving? Never again

I would check out www.avforums.com as I am not totally aufait with all in one boxes, you can get some pretty nice kit for about a monkey, with speakers, amp and progressive scan pal/ntsc dvd player.

My only advice would be spend at least 10-15% of your budget on cabling, it really does make a LOT of diiference.

I may have to bite the bullet and go back to richer sounds, much as I hate too. I would have thought coax is coax sin't it ? Its digital aint it ?

Oh, and how much is a monkey ?
I know Russ will poke my eyes out with a large stick for saying this, but if you're short on cash then just buy a decent stereo system, rather than a cheap surround system. the quality of the sound you get will be better, and in my opinion you need decent front speakers anyway rather than satellites, so if in the future you want full surround you can retain the fronts and just add rears and centre.

I don't think surround is that big a deal anyway, i have a NAD/Wharfedale stereo setup in my room and a Denon/Bose DD/DTS setup downstairs. i prefer my stereo setup, the quality and power craps all over the surround system - which incidentally blows fetid monkey bollocks for music.

  12. I hate moving. In a shoddy rental house for another 4 months at least till the new house.

What have I been upto this weekend. Friday night I went into the casino and won some cash before my mates wanted to go to the $1 peep shows so that was an interesting experience if not slightly disgusting.

Tonight I'm just having a quiet one because I worked today and I have to work again tomorrow.

I actually went to a few of those when I was a teenager, although I didn't "fully utilize" the privacy of the room. Even I have some self-esteem. Not much, but a little

The first thought that occurred to me when I saw the woman was "walking bacteria culture". She was a skank. Not quite as bad as Micky DiPaolo (past posts), but pretty close. Ew eeewwwww!

I ended up getting a Marantz SR-4400 receiver and a set of Gale 5.1 speakers.

No its not them - I will note down the model number tonight and let you know. QOTSA ? I wouldn't know how they sound on my system. I'll try some Morrissey tonight and let you know how that sounds.

  22. Well, I moved house OK. It took me a while to get my PC working on the network but now that I have I can enjoy 1Mbps ADSL. It is quite a good house, although a couple of the rooms are quite small. Everything works OK, it needs some cleaning and a little repair work but nothing major. We seem to have a decent, honest landlord too - always a huge plus.
