I was trying out Forgotten Hope, a gorgeous WWII mod for BF1942, and froze up my PC just as I punched a burst of gunfire from my P40 Warhawk into a transport. OK, well this isn't the first time that's happened with BF1942 and the 61.76 nVidia drivers so I hit the power button to shut off the system. I waited a few seconds then powered on and didn't get a POST. Tried resetting and it booted but on the BIOS check it said there wasn't a valid CMOS time or date entered so I went into setup to find all my BIOS settings were reset as well. I've never had an operating system crash my BIOS settings so that was pretty fun. Set it all up again and rebooted into XP just fine. Wierd.

Well I think it's about time to check for updated drivers from nVidia

Wow! I didn't think anything shy of a huge power supply glitch could do that. Any lightning going on at the time?

Thanks for telling it here. When it happens to me ...and it will ( :P ) I can take comfort by reminding myself "well, it happened to rally, so I don't feel so bad now"

  3. I've nailed my PC so badly that it couldn't even get into BIOS. I overclocked it far too hard and my old memory couldn't cope. It sat there with a black screen on startup and did nothing. The only solution was to physically reset the BIOS and remove the battery for a minute...

Yeah but I'm not overclocking this workstation so I couldn't figure out why the BIOS reset. After thinking about it some I think what happened was I hit the reset button at just the wrong time and either spiked power or glitched somehow to reset the board. I have my jumpers set to enable BIOS writes and resets so that may have been part of the problem. I just switched jumpers to protect the BIOS but hopefully I won't have to worry about that happening again.

I also realized I need a MCH heatsink. 53°C at load is a bit too much for my taste.
