Iinput file is about 166MB and yet when I convert to mpg (using either Nero or TMPGEnc) the output file is approx 2GB. Hpw can I minimize size of mpg while maintaining quality of originaly avi. Suggestions for Nero or TMPGEnc would be appreciated. Thanks.

Video : 145 MB, 913 Kbps, 25.0 fps, 544*416 (4:3), DX50 = DivXNetworks Divx v5, Supported
Audio : 20 MB, 127 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

Don't use Nero.
Using TMPGEnc load the PAL DVD template, change the resolution to 352x576 (1/2 DVD) set the encoding method to CBR and set the bitrate to 2500 Kbps. You will get a file of around 500 MB which should look pretty close to the original. Using VBR you can get it 25% smaller but it will take twice as long to encode.
