  1. I burned some home movies onto DVD (Memorex 4x). The video is fine on my computer. However, when I play the DVDs on a new pricey Toshiba television (with built in player) they stop/skip and pixilate. This also happens on my brand new Xbox. When played on a cheap TV (Sylvania) or a cheap DVD player, they play fine. What gives???

    Try different type of media.

  3. I've used three different brands, same problem.

Am I safe in assuming that since I can play the DVD through with no interruptions on at least one DVD player, the disc is properly burned?

The discs may be properly burned, but if the media is marginal it will likely cause playing problems on certain players.

There are way more than 3 cheap types of media. If you post what other media you have tried besides Memorex, maybe it'll make more sense.

If you don't already have a copy of DVDShrink, get it and run it on the three different media you have tried ...specifically the "Media ID". Post it here and maybe we can go from there.

  5. The other discs I tried were Maxell and Sony DVD-Rs. The three I've used are pretty good, aren't they?

I looked at that DVD Shrink site, and honestly, I don't understand it! I'm new to DVD authoring. How would it be able to test whether or not certain media have a problem? Thanks

  6. It will give the media manufacterers code. You can also use CD Speed or DVDInfoPro to get the code.

Yes. Those are not cheap brands. They're very good quality media (some Maxells are better than others, but generally they're good).

I can't think of a reason unless they were marginal burns from a flaky writer, and some players you have are more sensitive to that than others.

the files may be not compliant either ..

may be over on bitrate or something else

That's a link to the Mad Dog burner I'm using. There's no review on it, but the other Mad Dog burners got pretty good reviews.

Sorry to say, Toshiba is one of the few brands I have seen that have trouble with burned DVD's (amongst others)

I once biught my brother in law a 35 dollar mintek to replace his 200 dollar toshiba that played nothing but store bought dvd's

Check with the manufacturer , it may play only plus or minus dvd's

  12. Well I'm glad you posted that about Toshiba because I was getting ready to go to the store to look at new DVD drives. Thanks!

How about my Xbox? That's new too and can't read my burned DVDs. Like I said, the other two cheap players I tried it on worked ok.

Surprising because our Xbox plays all my burned DVDs, even the early cheapo Princo ones. Maybe BJ_M is right and the problem lies with the files themselves?

  14. My Xbox plays the DVDs, but they pause/pixillate every few minutes. I was reading the Xbox reviews and most people say theirs play DVDs fine, so I don't know. This is a very, very frustrating process.

How would the files not be compliant? I'm not even sure what that means. I use Sonic myDVD which doesn't have a specific bitrate option, but I ripped them at the slowest transcoding speed (highest video quality). The files play fine on the computer.

  16. Actually the Maxell discs played worse than the Memorex and Sony. I thought this was odd since Maxell got the best reviews.

  18. Yeah, I'm fairly confident that it's either the burner or the players. Which doesn't narrow it down very well. A guy at a computer store told me that since it plays OK on at least one DVD player, the burn/disc is fine. I'm not convinced though.

  19. I broke down and went shopping. I found a sweet deal -- $50 Pioneer A07 (w/ $40 mail in rebate) --couldn't pass it up. Anyone in Ballwin, Missouri can get the last one at Best Buy. I hope to God this solves the problem.

  21. When I first got my burner a while back I got "Sonic MyDVD" with it. I used it at first but noticed no other program would accept any of the captured video from it (noncompliant error messages and such). I stopped using it. I want to agree with BJ_M on this one. I would try another software solution before changing the hardware.
