If you're using Ritek DL's then you would need Herrie's firmware (herrie.org). Same goes to NEC ND-3500A... I'm not sure if the NEC has already published the official firmware for Ritek DL's? But that Herrie firmware should ok... also use the latest version of Nero

    I don't get it.

Throwing away money in the name of "experimentation" ?
Well I don't have to spend my money to any DVDR/W SL/DL discs...

  3. @Adder_78, Cool I'll give a go when I aquire some more DL discs. I've been reading about the Layer Break on alot of other forums. Someone did suggest that removing the Layer Break info first and then burning with Nero. This would make sense if burnt with CopyToDVD as apparently CTD updates the IFO file with the new LB position. However I am hesitant to use CTD again as the result was unplayable. I'm not sure but I was under the impression Nero's current version didn't add any LB info to the IFO file, so removing the LB beforehand and burning with Nero would produce a disc without any LB info in the IFO, would this disc even play properly? I have no doubt it would play on my computer but for standalones that's a different question. This was posted on another forum:

Here is the response from our Engineers:

    "Question:
I'm curious if nero yet supports adding the layer break flag into ifos when burning dual layer. Ie seamless layer break support. Anybody know?

    Answer:
Nero sets the layerbreak in images bigger than 4.7GB, in case they are below no layerbreak is set. This is the behaviour up from the next Nero version (> 6.3.1.26). Currently no layerbreak is set in the image.

    Question:
Or the opposite: paying attention to any existing layer break flag(s) and making the physical layer break match the position of one of them.

    Answer:
Currently this isn't done so far in Nero. Usually the layerbreak is removed
by most riping tools, only in case you have an unprotected DVD and copy the content to HD using the Explorer then the layerbreak in the IFO file is kept.
However we have created a Bug Entry to check for the layerbreak in the IFO file. This will be addressed in a future release."

So I take it, the next release might be quite useful.

P.S. @Adder_78 you know you want to send me some of those 4.85GB disc and some DL disc if you want

SO what about if you use on-the-fly ripping?

Thats not exactly true, as i don't know any ripping programs that remove the LB info (mind you I only use DVD Decrypter and that definetly doesn't do that). If you wanted to remove the Layer Break info, you could use IFOEdit or use DVD Shrink or even Nero Recode.

    [dwisniski,

What version of firmware do you have on your drive and what version of decryptor did you use?

I have a 108 and my attempt at iso rip and then burn failed. It wwrote everyhting, and said that it was finished, but it had to close the session. After 45 minutes of closing the session, still no movement. When I cancelled, I had a perfectly good $10 coaster

So far the only method that worked for me, was rip the files and then burn in Nero dvd-video mode.

    Thanks,
    kosekjm

Kosekjm, sorry to reply so late, I am using 1.10 firmware on the DVR-108, and the latest version of DVD Decrypter (downloaded from doom9.net). I haven't backed up any DVD's since Gladiator (DL's too expensive still), but the first burn went flawless, I was surprised how easy the process went.[/quote]
