Probably...but in reality...most 7th graders are a few years ahead of those classes...that's no bullshit. I have a girl who "I never got the whole plus-in idea thingy"....junior in HS, regular ed classes....it's amazing.

Fair use wise you could probably persuade a judge if need be that it constitutes fair use.
However, Norhtcat...in your 'NOOBness"...you aren't going to burn a copy for yourself...ARE YOU???
You could then throw fair use out the proverbial window. No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space. -
I can't speak for Cat, but I get depressed just thinking about all of the wasted education I had received and the time the teachers put into teaching it. I was strong in math and science, but ended up in a 'career' that uses neither of those studies...
I loved Calc and Physics.... had wonderful teachers who actually cared about their students. Like I said, I have forgotten much, much more than I remember - because I haven't used those skills in over 15 years.
I was actually thinking of going over to the local college and inquiring in any adult classes. I need something to challenge me... before my brain turns completely to mush. -
I know I am going off topic on the ot tread
but you know I loved my enrichment classes ( you know going to summer school even though you did not have to ) because the teachers really wanted to be there and made classes like bio and other like it fun

I have a bud who teaches conversational english in Japan... he likes it because the students who are in his classes are there voluntary, so he has a better atmosphere to teach in. They want to be there.
He mentioned that the english that is taught in their regular schools is mandatory and many of the kids don't want to be there.... I'm not a teacher, but I know which situation I'd reather be in if I had a choice....
Like you said - it's much more fun when the class WANTS to learn.
As for going off topic - hell, adam answered the question about 15 posts ago... so now the thread's 'public property' !! -
In my own personality - I think it is freakin amazing that some of have lived this long. As a joke I do tell some of them to hold their breath while getting a drink at the water fountain so they don't drown. Looking at some of them is like looking into a dogs eyes while talking to it. The trick to going over homework is to find the kid who has the single braincell the class is sharing that day.
Professionally - I think it is a very sad state of affairs and nothing more than a reflection of the inadequecies of the current educational system. I know many say, well...they slip through the cracks...67 kids do not "slip through the cracks"...there is a serious issue in there somewhere, but education more than anywhere else is a good ol' boy system where no matter how bad a teacher is, if he has tenure getting rid of him is near impossible. The thing I find irritating and I have been asked to leave our department meetings because of this is; It seems that everyone just wants to bitch about how low functioning the kids are. I see it differently...apparently...I see it as: They are already screwed up, we can worry about how they got that way later, they are here now, we need to work at fixing them.
I really don't see what the ******* problem is, math as we know it has not changed in 200 years, educators are suppose to get away from chalk, talk, worksheet format...but the last time I checked math is a skill, and if not practiced regularly, will quickly be lost. Even I would have to review mathematics that I took, I passed but haven't used in 10 years. The problem with math teachers is they can't accept that sometimes somethings are being done the best way and the most efficient way. And I know every single one of us studied limits...sometimes things reach a maximum.
I would like it to be noted that when expressing my irritation I tried to be polite, I tried to be diplomatic, professional and nice...those didn't work. So I fell back on good old reliable...."Look Goddammit, if all you want to do is bitch about it, then why don't you go **** yourself, that will be as productive as bitching about something instead of fixing it. I don't give a **** how they got that way, what do we need to do to get them back on track is the only thing we should be talking about."
In hind sight, I think I could have been a tad more tactful but I think my point was clearly made. I was asked to leave the meeting, and I did. I thought I was going to be in trouble but later our department chair came down to my room and thanked me for saying what she has been thinking but didn't have the balls to say. 2 teachers complained but the principal told them to take it up with me...they have not done that yet.
Damn you Capmaster for making me be professional on my sick day...******. -

@northcat_8: I agree that the educational system has it's problems (much the same here in Canada also) but I do believe that the problem goes deeper - the problems stem also to the families and the parents.
I've found that when it comes to the sciences and mathematics that most parents do not place enough importance - if they can't do it then who needs it? Personally, my parents would not (could not) help with anything science related from about grade 6/7. Lucky for myself, I was/am strong in math/science (hence the degree in engineering). I really feel for those kids when their parents put little emphasis on science/math let alone school in general - this has got to make your job even tougher than it already is. -

It's just like anything else, if you enjoy doing it time seems to fly by, if you dislike doing it, it seems like time stands still. I always laugh when my kids say "we didn't learn anything in your class last year." But pull "A" grades in pre-calc, when a "B" was the highest they got in my class.
Come on, all you have to do is outsmart a 17 year old kid. He doesn't want to do the work fine...don't force him, or he won't...just out smart him, how hard could that be?
I know there is not a teacher's edition for each kid's psyche, but if you talk to them, get to know them a little, learn about their life outside the school, kids are easy to manipulate...because they all...100% of them want to feel successful and they are successful at something find their strengths or passions and work from there. It's not complicated. -

But I liked Mrs. Summers <I actually tried to pick her up at a city pool, but I didn't know it was her and that's a different story> since I liked Mrs. Summers, I liked going to her class, thereby working harder for her than I did for any other english teacher. In school I had no idea she was so hot, she always wore some crazy ass outfits, but she held my attention in class, she was nice, she cared, she laughed with us, she joked with us, she was just a real person. Nothing in her class ever seemed like it came out of a text book and nothing ever seemed institutionalized.
I'll go ahead and tell you the pool story. I was 16, a few of us were at the city pool. I look across the pool and see this "chick" laying out. She's face down and has sunglasses on, wearing a red and white stripped bikini. My friends and I were checking her out so finally I said "**** it, I'm going to go talk to her." <I've never been able to "stew" very long, if I think about it very long, I'll do it...this has got me in trouble from time to time but that's how I am> So anyway, I head over there, I'm walking up from behind her and I get to her and I am seriously checking out her ass...ANYWAY...I neil down beside her and put my hand on her lower back and say "Hey, how you doing?" She turns her head around, pulls her glasses off and says "Well HI northcat, what are you doing here?"....that is one of the few times I have actually been embarassed...I was freakin shocked....but I am also honest and I said "well it appears I was over there checking out my english teacher, then I walked over here to pick you up." she just laughed. Too bad she didn't say "so where do you want to go"...or Northcat might be an english teacher -
All right! That's it!!
I'm selling the house, packing up the kids and wife, and moving to Northcat's district!
I want my girls to have a teacher like Cat!!! -
Agreed! Cat's got a good head on his shoulders and passion in his heart!
to Cat.

Northcat is the sort of teacher all high school kids want to get.
I had a few outstanding teachers in high school - Mr. Valenti (noo ...) in Jr. English, Miss Gerber in Frosh. English, Mr. Whitfield in electronics, my hot psychology teacher in my Jr. year ...and I can't remember her name. I remember what her ass looked like, though. Every male in that class just gazed at it for hours. We were all crushed when she married Mr. Valenti (noooo ...). Lucky ******
Mr. Valenti I had a crush on, Miss Gerber was like a buddy ....wait, that's not right. Miss Gerber I had a crush on, Mr. Valenti was like a buddy, Mr. Whitfield was the only human I've ever heard about whose first name was "Theron", and my psychology teacher, well ..... we enjoyed the field trips to Elgin State Hospital because we all (the males) fantasized about being held hostage in a small room by some more violent patients, and being forced to stay crowded into a small area with our teacher ....all hot and sweaty, her dress clinging to her soft, voluptuous .........
Dammit! And I'm at work too .......

Cap had to run off to the men's room ..... he'll be back in a minute...

What a prat.
I did terribly in the mock exams he set, and shortly before my final exam he told me that I was going to fail. Right to my face. I had a tear in my eye on exam results day when I handed over my score. 120/120 - flawless.
I'd studied very hard for it, and taught myself the whole subject over two years. Then, I nailed the exam. The only shame is that it makes him look good.
Another example of what he was like was when I took my driving test. I was standing talking to my mates afterwards, and he came and said "Well, did you fail?". I'd passed, first time.
Still, a student in the year just gone recorded a few of his "lessons" secretly and gave them to the head of Sixth Form. It confirmed all the complaints he'd recieved and ignored for years (including from myself) and this teacher got the sack. Finally - he deserved it. Lazy, obnoxious piece of scum.
On the other hand, I had a teacher called Mrs. Hilling. She taught me science since Year 7 (start of secondary school) and saw that I was interested in biology. She drove me to study this, and helped me through the next seven years - right into a top university. I owe her an awful lot, and it is a shame that I can't ever really repay her.
Well, what a long post!
