Have you ever taken your cell phone to another country? Trust me, it dies, unless you're on the same type of system. Most are not universal.

Sure, USA and Russia both have huge bombs! Think they work the same? Not on your life.

You can easily convert PAL to NTSC, and NTSC to PAL, and SECAM to PAL, and PAL to SECAM, and NTSC to SECAM, SECAM to NTSC ... if you buy the proper equipment.

  3. I'm just frustrated with it all.

So I need professional equipment just to watch "A fish called Wanda" at home? That just doesn't seem right.

And I can take my phone out the country and put a new chip in it and it works like a charm

    Hello,

That's because they want you to by the dvd in the region it's intended for. And your out of luck if it's not released there yet. BECAUSE it takes so much work to convert it's easier to hope for the release in the correct format. It does suck but they control it.

  5. It's not that difficult. And your conversion is an easy one. Your source is film. If that frustrates you, you should definately not attempt to do PAL video to NTSC video or vice-versa.

My $40 Cyberhome plays PAL pretty well. My $250 LiteOn DVD recorder (now about $150) plays PAL perfectly. These are DVDs mind you.

What you did is sort of like buying a British car. Your steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car. It was not meant for you. But you bought it anyway, so now you've got to figure out how to make it work.

Stay away from the "Big Guys - Name Brand" DVD players and you'll find quite a few of them convert from one format to the other....it's becoming more and more common every day. The only problem is that most manufacturers do not advertise the fact that their machine actually does convert.

Try taking it to Japan, you will be SOL there, and plenty of other places too!

As others have said, there are methods for converting PAL to NTSC, but whichever method and tools you choose, they all require some learning and effort. If you are not willing to expend the required efoort, go down to your local DVD player retailer and buy a player that will do the conversion for you, but make sure it is (or can be made) region free too. Some effort required there too I am afraid.

  10. How about some one-upsmanship (one-downsmanship)?: My $35 Yamakawa DVD-218 plays PAL DVDs on my NTSC television pretty well!

Yes, there are methods...but i agree with the poster: i find the results disappointing. Even with commercial software I tested, there is a clearly visible loss of quality with for example converting DV-PAL to DV-NTSC.

  12. I had no problem making a PAL 25i video into an NTSC 30i video. It looks great to me. I cannot tell the difference unless I compare the two frame for frame. Video is detailed and motion is fluid and jitter free. The audio synchs up perfectly. And converting interlaced PAL is supposed to harder than film. The only thing that should even come close to challenging is synching the audio. But it is easy as well. Read the guides.

There is a new tool in the new tools section that supposedly will take a pal DVD straight to a NTSC DVD.

Someone let me know if it works or not? heh heh.

Its not as easy as that for NTSC to PAL, RGB Scart is a european thing as far as i know, and most US DVD players are connected via S-Video, which doesn't carry any colour signals.

I dont know much about a Component connection as i haven't used it personally yet.
