Is the difference between the two slight enough that you would never notice a difference?
it seems people favor the northwood. My delima is buying something I know is older technology. Is it possible that I may find myself wishing I had the SS3 instruction set down the road? Overclocking isn't something I intend on doing, I just want to speed up my video encoding and editing.
The Prescott is also cheaper and I plan on upgrading the heatsink no matter which one I buy.

You'll never miss SSE3.
As long as you get a case with good airflow, a better heatsink and fan, don't overclock, and don't come back here posting about high CPU temps in the future then go for the Prescott. It all depends on how much attention you pay to your computer. -
It took me a few days to make the decision, but I ordered the Northwood. I am using my existing memory for now until I save up for the good stuff. Thanks for the help.

Morris- you made the right decision. The prescott
either in 478 pin or Socket T is not worth the $$
